A Guide on How to Transport a Flat Screen TV the Right Way

A flat panel or flat screen television uses various technologies for display in a flat and thin format. Plasma, Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Light Emitting Diode (LED), Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED), and Ultra High-Definition (UHD) are just some of the examples.

Because the screens are smooth and even – not convex, the display is not distorted at the edges. Thus, it provides crystal-clear, vivid and very detailed pictures on the screen. They also do not come cheap, with high-quality and larger models costing thousands of dollars.

For many people the TV is their pride and joy, unfortunately, it is also quite fragile and can easily be damaged. Hence, you must be careful and follow these guidelines when transporting your flatscreen to your new place. Besides, you wouldn’t want your money to go down the drain, right? (Your wife was probably angry enough when you bought it in the first place.) 😉

Get Ready With Your Tools And Supplies

As with any project, the first step is to always be prepared. Gather all the tools and supplies needed. You don’t want to be in the middle of packing only to find out that you don’t have your packing tape handy. Get ready with the following:

• newspaper/packing paper
• microfibre cloth
• scissors/cutting tool
• post-its and marking pen for labelling
• screwdriver
• packing tapebubble wraps
• ties
• moving blanket

Remove Accessories And Cords

Disconnect the television from the power source. Remove any devices (PlayStation, X-Box, Blu-Ray Player, external drives, cable box, etc.) attached to it.

Roll Up Cords And Cables And Store In A Bag

Roll up all the cords and tie them up. Label the different cords and cables so it will be easier for you to identify them. Place everything in a bag including the remote controls. Add a note outside the bag to indicate its contents.

Prepare Your TV

Flatscreens are usually mounted on the wall. At times, TV mounts are too secured that unfastening them can be difficult. Remember that your TV screen, no matter how light or thin, is made of breakable materials. Therefore, this is not a one-man job.

Ask help from friends or family members to help you. Unscrew the mount pieces while the other person is supporting the TV. Put the screws in resealable plastic bags and properly label them.

If your television is on a stand, have one or two friends lift it up and place it carefully on a clean and flat surface.

Clean Your TV

Wipe off any dust or debris from your tv using a soft and dry microfibre cloth to prevent scratches without damaging its protective coating.

Dust particles can scratch the screen or clog the inner hardware. Check if there are existing cracks or damages so you can tell whether mishaps occurred during the move.

Protect Your TV

Cushion and cover your television. Wrap it loosely with packing tape with its sticky side out and then roll the bubble wrap over. The latter should adhere to the sticky side of the packing tape preventing it from slipping around.

Place Your TV In A Box

Some people will often choose to keep the original packaging that their TV came in, and some will not. If the box is still in your possession, it is important that you have all of the original packaging – not just the box! Without the foam inserts, the TV will be free to move around and rattle inside the box.

If you no longer have them, fill the space with packing materials such as newspapers or packing papers instead. You can also purchase a TV moving box from a hardware store online or simply ask the removalists to bring one.

If you don’t have a box to place your TV in, no need to worry. Cover the television with moving blanket to protect it. Secure the blanket with packing tape.

Keep Your TV Upright

After you have placed your tv inside the box or wrapped it with a moving blanket, always keep it in an upright position. Don’t lay it on its side or place anything on top of it. This is to avoid cracks, breaks and permanent damage to your precious entertainment appliance.

Move Your TV Cautiously

If you are planning to use your own vehicle for transporting your tv, make sure to check if it fits in your car. You can place it on the backseat or in the trunk.
