Ohio amusement park Cedar Point will reduce its hours and move to a weekend-only schedule next month.
The move is likely due to small crowds amid the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, MLive affiliate Cleveland.com reports.
The park announced upcoming reduced hours via Twitter on Friday, July 24. Beginning Monday, Aug. 17, the park will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday-Sunday. It will be closed Monday-Thursday. Hours are posted through Labor Day; the park will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on that holiday, Monday, Sept. 7.
Cedar Point opened for the season on July 9 – two months later than normal. The plan was to limit crowds to 20% of capacity using a reservation system; 10,000-12,000 tickets were available per day. Low attendance led to the discontinuation of the reservation system earlier this week.

“The people are not ready to return yet when it comes down to it,” Dennis Speigel, president of International Theme Park Services in Cincinnati, told Cleveland.com. “There are still so many unknown factors when it comes to COVID.”
Upon arrival, park employees are using touchless thermometers to check guests’ temperatures. Visitors over 2 years old are required to wear a mask in the park except in four RelaxZones where masks can be temporarily removed.
Social distancing is being encouraged throughout the park with signs on the ground and elsewhere. Ride queues have been extended to accommodate social distancing, and dining areas and shops have been reconfigured. Seating capacity on rides vary. Some rides are already configured with seats six feet apart while others have up to two-thirds of seats blocked off.
Additional protocols include touchless transactions; limited guest-associate contact; enhanced cleaning procedures in high-touch areas, dining locations, hotel rooms and restrooms; capacity management throughout the park; and additional hand sanitization stations.
