Every year we strive to make The Show™ a more action-packed and authentic experience. For MLB® The Show™ 20, on top of gameplay improvements and new modes (including the return of a fan favourite!), we’ve worked to increase the rewards you earn in every game mode: the more you play, the more you earn!
Batting: Perfect-Perfect
We’ve made serious strides to reward high-skilled hitters with Perfect-Perfect batting. Now, elite hitters who square pitches up perfectly will see more powerful results!
Extreme catch indicator (ECI)
The ECI tells you when your outfielder is in a scenario for a borderline-catchable ball. Do you play for the spectacular catch, and risk placing your outfielder out of position as the runners circle the bases—or stay back, play it safe, and give up the hit?
Outfield Assist Accuracy Meter
On close plays from the outfield, the Outfield Assist Accuracy Meter—a new component of Button Accuracy Throwing—lets you thread the needle and nail the runner! Now, a perfect throw meter placement creates a perfectly placed throw to slap the tag on the runner as he slides in.
Custom franchise mode
Have you ever wished your hometown had its own team, or that MLB® was composed of just your favourite teams? With Custom Franchise Mode, you can relocate any existing MLB® franchise to a new city of your choosing, give them a complete makeover, or even create your own brand new organization from scratch!
Custom Leagues
Back by popular demand! A new spin on an old fan favourite, Custom Leagues is revamped for 2020 and better than ever. Choose to play in a competitive or relaxed environment, pick your ideal season length, and customize the league with your favourite MLB® teams—or run a league with your DD squads for ultimate bragging rights!
Showdown
In Diamond Dynasty’s all-new Showdown, you’ll draft a squad to take on Legends and MLB® Superstars and run the gauntlet in a series of increasingly difficult single-player challenges. Perks earned as you play make your squad more powerful and improve your starting position against the Final Boss. Will you survive the Showdown and be the last squad standing?
March to October
March to October is back with even deeper and more rewarding experiences! Front office tasks and player development opportunities have been expanded significantly, the all-new Trade Hub gives you unparalleled control over your journey, and you can now customize your settings to achieve a more tailored, personal experience. Improved player rewards throughout the season and after completion provide extra motivation to complete your March to October!
Road to the Show
The Road to the Show you know and love is back for another year, and this time, we took steps to make it the most visually pleasing and comfortably immersive RTTS experience yet. In-game pop-up icons show your player’s skill growth in real time, point out your Bros and Rivals, and highlight how those relationships affect your player’s skills in the moment. Pitchers can also change their arsenal far more easily than in the past, allowing you to find the right mix of offerings by trial-and-error—like a real pitching prospect!
Thanks to a new agreement with MLB® and the MLBPA, the full collection of Minor League Rosters are in MLB® The Show™ for the first time ever! Make/Get your start in Road to the Show, with real players making their debuts over the next few years, or show off your Minor League knowledge by stacking your Franchise with all of the next decade’s superstars!
Right off the bat, we’re including 25 new Legends in the game – with more to come as the season goes along, as well as new LEGENDARY Storylines and Flashback Appearances. We’ve also added 532 gameplay animations, 101 batting stances, 103 pitching animations, and 41 throwback uniforms, all new to this year’s game—but, hey, who’s counting?
Note: Ranked Seasons, Events, and Battle Royale sub-modes require a PlayStation®Plus membership, which is sold separately.
Diamond Dynasty is the ultimate fantasy baseball experience—a chance to play as your own team composed of real Live Series players, plus hundreds of Legends and Flashback players spanning over 100 years of baseball history. Collect their baseball cards from Packs and build your 25-man squad to compete against opponents online – or choose Single Player mode to take on computer-controlled teams.
Diamond Dynasty begins with a simple set of tutorial missions to teach you the basics of the mode. Your initial team is chosen automatically, but you’ll get plenty of chances to earn new players, upgrades, and rewards as you learn your way through the mode.
But before any of that, your team needs a name, logo, and uniforms. Use The Show’s uniform creator to give your team a unique look that shows off your own personality and style. Armed with your dream team and your custom look, you’re ready to take on Diamond Dynasty!
Having trouble choosing a logo? Check out the Logo Vault and choose from hundreds of logos lovingly created and graciously shared by other members of The Show community. Of course, this means you can upload your own custom logos and see if your creation becomes a fan favourite, too!
As you play, you’ll earn rewards, Stubs, Stars, and XP. Stubs are the in-game currency you spend on cards, either in Packs or from the Community Marketplace. Stars are connected to the Inning Programs, and hitting Star milestones grants you premium rewards each inning. Collecting XP unlocks some seriously useful rewards, too—and this year, the XP Rewards path has been greatly expanded. New cards will be added as the season goes on, so be on the lookout for ways to improve your squad!
Note: Ranked Seasons, Events, and Battle Royale sub-modes require a PlayStation®Plus membership, which is sold separately.
Showdown is a Diamond Dynasty mode unlike any other. Instead of using your usual squad or a pre-set team, you’ll draft a small set of players at the outset to anchor your lineup and staff. As you successfully complete challenges, you’ll earn and choose additional players to round out your squad, as well as Perks to boost your on-field performance. This all leads up to the Final Showdown, where your performance in the Challenges directly influences how much of an advantage (or disadvantage) you start with!
Ranked Seasons:offer rewards as you win games against online opponents and climb the leaderboard for that Season. The leaderboard resets every month, providing fresh incentives to stay at the top.
Insider Tip: Don’t give up! Some players in Ranked Seasons—especially in the lower divisions—feel like the sky is falling and quit out of the game if they initially fall behind by a couple of runs. But nine innings is a long time, and momentum can swing. Plus, you earn rewards for finishing out your losses—but earn nothing if you quit early.
Events are dynamic, time-limited challenges where you build a team based on a set of themed restrictions (such as West-division exclusive teams, “Gold and Diamond hitters only,” or “Common pitchers only”) and play games with non-standard rules (such as Quick Counts active, six-inning games, or no visible strike zone reticle). You’ll then compete against other players in your quest for rewards.
Insider Tip: Ball players whose slumps last for months (or even years) sometimes find relief in corrective lenses. The Show ballplayers who seem unable to break a cold snap can simulate the same effect by toying with different Batting Camera Views in the Game Options. Sometimes, a fresh perspective makes all the difference!
Battle Royale is a player-versus-player experience where you draft a team from sets of cards chosen randomly and grouped by tier, then try to outlast your rivals in a fierce double-elimination tournament of three-inning games. The pitchers get tired faster, the strategy is tenacious, the rewards are wonderful, and every pitch counts!
Insider Tip: In prior years, the savvy strategy in Battle Royale was to punt your starting rotation with a bunch of common/bronze pitchers, then switch to your best bullpen arm after one batter. This year, a new MLB rule mandates that each pitcher face at least three batters before exiting (unless injured). This rule will be in play in Battle Royale for 2020, so building a god-squad offense and bullpen will involve a significantly higher amount of risk than in years past. The balancing acts between hitting and pitching, as well as starters and relievers, should be much more personal and fluid than it was last year.
Conquest is The Show’s beloved spin on a classic turn-based strategy game, pitting your Diamond Dynasty squad against real MLB teams in a race to take over the map. Conquer the territories controlled by your rival MLB teams, complete the Conquest-specific Missions, and upgrade your team as you progress.
Insider Tip: The ratio of attacking troops to defending fans determines the difficulty options available for you. New players of The Show should take this time to gain an advantage by playing on Rookie or Veteran; hardcore players can rush Spartan-style into hexagons held by significantly more fans and conquer them with a win on Hall of Fame or Legend. Some advanced Conquest programs will inevitably require an attack from a shorthanded position if you wish to attain maximum rewards!
After a big rookie season in MLB® The Show™ 19, there was never any question that Moments were going to be a big part of the game plan again this year! Moments might take you back in time to relive the game’s lore, while others showcase the highlights and happenings of the 2020 season as they occur. Moments might use your DD team, or a pre-assigned roster. Try them all!
Programs are available for limited times (except the Create-A-Player and Team Affinity programs), and each one is unique. Each Program contains a series of Moments and in-game missions unique to the Program, which bestow rewards upon completion. Make sure you complete the set before it expires to max out your rewards!
Insider Tip: If you’re struggling to beat a specific Moment or just looking for a more in-depth guide to The Show than these pages contain, check out the forums on theshownation.com[http://theshownation.com] for tips and advice from some of the sharpest gamers the MLB The Show community has to offer.
Collections are completed by trading in specific cards while they are open. Each Collection comes with its own unique rewards and completing them to the targeted milestones earns you powerful players and equipment.
Insider Tip: Use the Community Marketplace to bridge that last gap or two in a collection you’re working towards—if you’ve got the Stubs to cover those items, of course.
In the most popular returning mode of MLB® The Show™, you will embark on your very own baseball journey. Starting off as a fresh young prospect, you’ll grow and improve your custom created player and compete for baseball greatness along the way.
Improved Communication & Visual Experience
Building on the performance-based stat progression and in-game challenges implemented in recent years, MLB® The Show™ 20 ties the whole experience together with a more detailed and immersive visual environment than ever before. Stat gains and losses are displayed as they happen in real-time, Bros and Rivals are more clearly identified in-game, and their effect on gameplay are also displayed, putting you in the driver’s seat of your player’s progression.
Pitch Development
We’ve made it easier than ever to develop fourth and fifth pitches, or even replace a pitch in your arsenal with something completely different. Just like the pros, you can adjust your repertoire through training to maximize your effectiveness on the mound.
Note: If you don’t want to start from scratch, import your character from MLB® The Show™19 and continue their journey right where you left off!
First, decide what type of player you want to be. Where are you from? What position do you play? What’s your name and number? Which hand do you use to bat or catch? You’ll then choose your archetype, which guides your development as a player. For example, Pure Power players will find it easy to add strength and power-type attributes, while Small Ball players have a great advantage in speed.
Next you’ll choose your Personality, which affects the perks available to you throughout your career. There are four personality types: Lightning Rod, Maverick, Captain, and Heart and Soul. Select three, with your first choice having more weight than your second, and your second more than your third.
Note: Regardless of your initial starting personality, ultimately, your teammate and opponent interactions will weigh far heavier in the Personality your player develops. Our actions, as always, speak volumes more than our intentions.
Finally, create your player’s appearance. You can customize every aspect of your player’s appearance, from their face and hair down to muscle definition or the scars on their face. Most crucially, this is the point where you can choose the signature bat flip your player shows off after he cranks a monster dinger into the upper deck. Don’t feel like crafting your own player? Press to Randomize and roll the dice with the player fate gives you.
With your character complete, you’ll need to impress the scouts to earn your spot in the draft. Show off your skills at the Bowman Scout Day, dominate the Topps Player Showcase, get drafted by a real Major League team, and start climbing the ladder and crafting your legacy!
During your career, you—as a ballplayer and as a teammate—will repeatedly make key decisions about your growth and progression. These decisions can maximize your potential in the long term, grant you immediate gains, or impart access to special bonuses.
Put your baseball knowledge to the test by taking control of your favourite team and guiding them to victory! You call the shots on all aspects of management, from drafting and training players to signing free agents, hiring new staff, and managing your budget.
Don’t want to start from scratch? Too attached to the prospect your Franchise drafted in last year’s game? Import your previous team from MLB® The Show™ 19 and jump back in without missing a beat.
Custom Franchise Mode
With Custom Franchise Mode, you can select which teams to compete in your franchise or create entirely new teams of your own! New teams can replace any current team in the MLB, or you can create a fresh team from scratch with its own location. You can also adjust personalization features such as mascots, team colours, logos, etc. These adjustments can be done for newly created teams or the 30 existing MLB teams—the only limit to what your league can be is your own imagination!
Phases break the season down and contextualize each important event throughout the year that a real front office would focus on. Each Phase contains a unique set of challenges, goals, and opportunities to help you make more informed decisions and better plan the future of your club.
These features give players a variety of ways to play Franchise games based on their individual play style and time commitment:
Smart Sim
Smart Sim prompts the user when late-inning, critical game situations occur, so you can have a direct effect on the standings without playing full games. You will also be prompted to step in on statistically significant events, such as hitting for the cycle or a potential no-hitter.
Retro Mode
Play Retro Mode with your franchise team!
Player Lock
Player Lock lets you choose a player to lock on and play as in a shortened, RTTS-style game.
Use Quick Manage to speed things up and simplify your responsibilities. You’ll make all managerial decisions during simulated games, such as setting up your rotation and batting order. You can also quickly input in-game team strategies, while your players handle the in-game action. Easily jump between Quick Manage and standard gameplay for a flexible, fully customizable Franchise experience.
As a manager, there are many factors under your supervision—balancing the team budget, maintaining player morale, signing new players, keeping up with your GM goals, and more. These Franchise responsibilities can be broadly divided into three sections: Coaching, Player Development, and General Manager. When creating a franchise, you can distribute these tasks between yourself and your staff by setting them to Auto or Manual. Tasks can easily be reassigned at any time.

Insider Tip: Just because there’s nobody fielding the ball doesn’t mean you shouldn’t hit smart! Taking a ball boosts your active Multiplier by 2—getting that multiplier built up is the secret to posting high scores, so don’t chase! Foul balls don’t get Multiplier bonuses, but their distance does count towards your score—and, of course, they keep you alive with two strikes.
