Nick Cannon Says Mariah Carey Is the Only Woman He’d Ever Marry Again
It’s been more than five years since Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey broke up, and while she has moved on to other people, he seemingly has not.
The reason he hasn’t gotten serious with anyone? Well, he doesn’t want to get married again. But if he does decide to take another trip down the aisle, it’ll be with one woman only — his ex.
A quick recap of Cannon and Carey’s relationship
Cannon and Carey started seeing each other in the spring of 2008 after he appeared in her music video for “Bye, Bye.”
After less than two months of dating, they got married on April 30, 2008 at the “We Belong Together” crooner’s Bahamian estate, with Carey calling Cannon her “soulmate” in an interview with People.
“I never felt a love like this was in the cards for me,” she continued.
Cannon added: “She is beautiful on the outside and 10 times as beautiful on the inside.”
They were together for about six years — a period in which they welcomed two children, Monroe and Moroccan — until Cannon filed for divorce in 2014. Sources described their separation to People as “contentious,” noting that Carey had once spent hours on the phone with attorneys over property and the custody of their children.
But, luckily, Carey and Cannon have since built a healthy co-parenting relationship and are seemingly amicable toward each other.
Cannon’s comments on remarrying are interesting
The Wild ‘N Out star recently sat down on T.I.’s ExpediTIously podcast and said that once he divorced Carey, he knew he would “never get married again.”
“Once I stepped away from that, I [realized] that construct is not designed for me,” he explained. “But even before that, I was like, ‘I don’t believe in marriage.’ But, sh*t, it was Mariah Carey. Whatever she [says], I’m with it. If she wanted to go to the moon, I’m like ‘Let’s go.’ If I’mma marry someone, I’mma marry her.”
He went on to say that marriage has too many rules. “I don’t want to have to answer to anybody. I want to be by myself. Forever,” he continued.
Also, he said, he doesn’t want to be “responsible” for another person’s happiness.
But then Cannon noted that he would remarry Carey, whom he described as his “dream girl.”
“If I was to do it again, it would be to her. It would be Mariah,” Cannon said. Later, he added, “She’s always gonna be someone that I love.”
Carey almost remarried after their split
The Emancipation of Mimi singer almost got married to Australian billionaire James Packer, whom she met in 2014.
The duo went public with their relationship in 2015 and got engaged in 2016. But they reportedly broke up the same year after getting into an argument during a vacation in Greece.
A source close to the singer told People at the time that Packer was not in a “mentally healthy place” and was not “present for Mariah or her family,” prompting her to leave him. But Packer’s representative said those claims were “simply not true.”
She then moved on to choreographer Bryan Tanaka in 2016. But we can’t say whether they plan on tying the knot because Carey isn’t as open about her romantic relationships these days.
“I don’t really talk about my personal life,” she told the Associated Press in 2017. “Because that’s what I used to do and it really worked for a minute back, a while ago. I just don’t feel comfortable talking about my personal life … me and my boyfriend don’t want to do that.”
Fair enough.
Only time will tell if they’ll get married, but if not, well, Cannon is around.
