How to Upgrade The Spear in Horizon: Zero Dawn

In Horizon: Zero Dawn, players can explore the post-apocalyptic world as Aloy, a social outcast that occupies most of her time hunting machines and gathering supplies. With her bow, spear, and traps at her side, she can take down aggressive machines many times her size, as well as people from opposing factions.

Aloy’s spear is her default melee weapon that can be used to battle or override machines in the world of Horizon: Zero Dawn. Using her spear, Aloy can perform light or strong attacks, and even certain context-dependent attacks that can be used depending on her skills or abilities. Her spear can be modified using found materials in order to make it stronger or have new abilities.

How to Upgrade Aloy’s Spear in Horizon: Zero Dawn

There are three spear upgrades that can be achieved in Horizon: Zero Dawn and its DLC’s: Damage Upgrade, Overriding Mods, and Coil Modifications. These upgrades can increase the spear’s damage potential, or give it special abilities.

Completing the quest In Her Mother’s Footsteps will reward Aloy with a boost to the spear’s damage, turning it into a “Rare” weapon. When Aloy rescues Arana, her father, Thok, will upgrade Aloy’s spear when she comments on his late wife’s crafting performance on Arana’s spear.

When Aloy defeats the first corruptor in the game, she will scavenge an override module that she can attach to the base of the spear. Using this module, Aloy can override machines to make them an ally for a short period of time or permanently depending on her skill upgrades. Completing cauldrons, underground machine manufacturing facilities will allow Aloy to override more types of machines. Even if the ability to override a specific species is unlocked, Aloy will not be able to override the corrupted version.

To make Coil Modifications, players will need to have purchased The Frozen Wilds DLC. When Aloy finishes the A Secret Shared errand, the ability to modify her melee weapons will be unlocked. Kamut the shaman will compliment Aloy’s spear and will instruct her to take parts from a “metal bird” in the Drone Hangar to modify it and Sylen’s Lance. Special coils can be used in the modification slot to increase her spear’s damage.

Now that Aloy’s spear can reach its maximum potential, players can quickly dispatch machines and humans alike to help Aloy solve the mystery of her existence and prevent corruption from changing the world as she knows it.
