The Human Skeletal System
Our skeletal system is one of our body’s cornerstones as one will not be able to survive without it. The human skeleton helps allow a person to move by carrying the weight of our body. The joints, muscles, and connective tissues wrap around our skeleton and work together to allow our body parts to become mobile.
Our bones also produce red and white blood cells in the bone marrow. The red blood cells help transport oxygen and nutrients around our bodies. White blood cells help protect us by fighting dangerous foreign contaminants and viruses that enter our body.
Certain parts of our skeletal system also hold and protect our organs. The skull holds our brain and our rib cage protects our lungs and heart. Our skeleton also stores nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D.
How to Keep Our Bones Healthy
We can keep our bones healthy by maintaining a diet that is strong in Vitamin D and Calcium. Food such as dairy products, fish, and red meat among others.
To help keep our bones strong and our joints healthy, regular exercise is needed. Regular exercise is also important to avoid putting on extra weight that will cause stress to your bones.
Fun Facts About Our Skeleton
The adult human body contains 206 bones. One hand and wrist alone has 54 bones! A human foot is made up of 26 bones.
The human thigh bone is the strongest and longest bone in the human skeleton. Contrast that with the stapes, located in the middle of our ears, is the smallest and lightest bone in the human body.
We have ball and socket joints such as our hip and shoulder joints. These are our most movable joints. They allow us to move our arms and legs at different angles and in all directions.
