Introduction to World Tendency System
In Demon’s Souls and Demon’s Souls Remake, your actions in the world of Boletaria will weigh heavily against your character. This should be familiar to all you gamers out there—maybe you’ve experienced it in the form of “morality,” “karma,” or by another name before. In the world of Demon’s Souls and Demon’s Souls Remake, it’s known as Tendency, and it’s attributed to both your character and each of the regions you’ll traverse.
When you begin play, both Character Tendency and World Tendency start off at neutral. Depending on your actions, they can shift to white or black (good deeds make it go white while bad deeds make it go black). But of course, it isn’t as simple as being either black or white, as there are shades along the way that determine the level of the Tendency’s effects. So if you’re just a little evil, enemies will only be a little more difficult to down, whereas if you’re a true miscreant, well then you’ve gone and made an already brutally difficult game a lot more brutal.
At any given time you can jump into your Main Menu and navigate to a convenient Tendency tab to try to gauge what state your actions have left the world and your character in. Each region’s Archstone is there to represent its respective World Tendency, whereas Character Tendency is represented by a human figurine in the center. For both representations, they’ll gradually shine with an increasingly brighter glow or shift towards a darkness void of any light to depict white and black respectively.
World Tendency
As stated before, each Archstone region has its own World Tendency. These are all completely independent of each other; your actions in one Archstone can never affect the Tendency of other Archstones, and there’s nothing to stop you from simultaneously having one Archstone be a shining beacon of hope and good will while another acts as a blackened bastion for all things unholy. You’ll want to use this to your advantage, since you might find greater benefits in keeping a certain region white while the allure of turning another region black draws you.
In worlds of Black Tendency, you’ll find that enemies give you a lot more trouble than usual but also give you more souls and better drops once defeated. That former point is the result of their attacks being stronger and your HP being lower. In White Tendency worlds, the opposite is true: enemies aren’t as difficult, your HP is at its max potential (depending on form, of course), but the rewards for putting down enemies aren’t as great as they could be. And as mentioned before, the degree of these effects will grow with how white or black the region is.
So now that you know what you can strive for, here’s what you need to do to get there. When you defeat a boss within a world, it’ll shift Tendency towards white. If you lose your body within a region (which is to say, you die while not in Soul form), it’ll shift Tendency towards black. These are your most basic ways of changing World Tendency, and your only options to initially stray from neutral Tendency. Once you’ve pushed things enough to white or black, new options will open up to help you shift back in the opposite direction. For example, in regions that have achieved a certain level of black Tendency, a special Primeval Demon will appear. Killing it will help shift Tendency back to white. This is the more basic example, however.
Each Archstone region has a special NPC that is deeply rooted in World Tendency. At the further end of white World Tendency, you’ll open up access to this NPC, and will find yourself rewarded with typical RPG goodness: new quest, new item, etc. However, should you not be happy with your white World Tendency, you’ll find that offing the NPCs spawned by it is quite convenient for taking things in the other direction. Should you blacken the region enough, you’ll find yourself greeted by its special NPC once again, only you might notice they have a different aura about them this time… Now they’re a Black Phantom NPC, and like most characters in Demon’s Souls, they want you dead. As you might already have guessed, killing these Black Phantom NPCs can greatly shift World Tendency back toward white. As an aside, whether the NPC you’re killing happens to be good or evil, you can always count on their corpse to yield new, usually rare goodies, which will differ depending on their friendliness at time of death. It’s incentives like these that’ll ensure you won’t simply leave World Tendency be.
What Does World Tendency Look Like?
If you are wondering how to tell if you have pure white or black world tendency, you need to navigate to the World Tendency tab on your options menu. You’ll notice a sphere below each Archstone. The following colors represent its tendency. Pure White and Pure Black world tendencies have glowing effects: Pure White has a horizontal line indicating a lens flare, while Pure Black has red wisps floating within the icon.

Do Invasions Affect World Tendency?
The answer to this is both yes and no.
Invading someone will have no effect on your World Tendency, regardless of the outcome. It will however affect your Character Tendency, if you sucessfully kill other players your Character Tendency will move towards Black.
Being invaded by someone will have an effect on both World and Character Tendency, killing the invader will move both Tendencies toward White, dying to the invader will move only World Tendency towards Black.
Note that dying to another player acting as the Old Monk while you’re in soul form will not affect your World Tendency.
This is true for both the original Demon’s Souls (though player invasions are no longer possible there due to a server shutdown) and the Demon’s Souls Remake.
Does the Resurrection Miracle Affect World Tendency?
No.

In Demon’s Souls, it’s quite difficult to measure the current status of your World Tendency, however, you can check the list below of various events to get a rough estimate of where your World Tendency is.

- Rows that are marked with a (*) causes an effect on all 5 Archstones.
- (+) yields to White World Tendency and (-) falls toward Black World Tendency

This mechanic would be fine if it didn’t work against itself.
You get your tendency white by just playing the game and killing bosses,
Assuming you won’t die a single time in human form you get access to cool items and a zone you couldnt get to before
and now the shitty stuff begins
This mechanic also spawns hostile NPCs or black phantoms in white and black tendencies respectively and they raise the opposite tendency a lot like what? This makes no ****ing sense that an NPC that is hostile, and i can only access by making my tendency white would send me straight back to black and make the zone inaccesible again with no way to go back.
if you die in a location like tunnel city from either parkour sections or dragon god’s perfectly good sight that can see you trough a collumns sometimes you go towards black.
Let’s assume you die twice and kill all the bosses in there, this results in you being unable to acces the dragon bone crusher and renders you unable to make tendency white unless you play pvp. This makes 0 sense. It should be that if you kill that hostile NPC or black phantom you just make the world go more towards that tendency and you get to maybe choose if you want to lock it since you reached 100% anyway.
BONUS CONTENT
If you messed up your tendency and can’t get the dragon bone crusher follow these steps.
Go to dragon god arena
Set your settings to cinematic mode
Quit out
Run like hell to where to rubble is
The rubble will fail to load its collisons so run trough it (might take couple of attempts) and you can grab the sword without the right tendency
Quit out again since now you are trapped in rubble lol

I’m surprised no one anywhere talks about how offline-only players are screwed for PWWT if they didn’t get it before killing the final boss of each archstone.
I just tried to do Stonefang but after killing the Primeval Demon and literally all other enemies and BPs (including Scirvir’s BP), i’m only at slightly above neutral. I know, I know: Only the Primeval and Scirvir’s BP can push it white (since all bosses are already dead). Wanted to cover my bases.

Apparently, in the Remake, the changes/recalculation to World Tendency happens if you teleport from one place to another inside the SAME World, AND ALSO BY JUST SAVING AND RELOADING TOO!
PS3 always had you go to Nexus for changes to apply.

BUG?? I had all 5 worlds in pure white (I was collecting the coins). I invaded a player in world 4 and killed him, then I commited suicide in world 1. So world 1 was “gray” while the other worlds remained pure white. Then, I invaded once more a player but this time the host killed me. When I returned to my world, the World 1 became pure white while all other worlds turned gray (the reveresed). I closed the game, but the worlds tendency remained like that.
Your own worlds tendency are not supposed to change when you are the one invading other players…

Such a dumb mechanic. It disincentivizes you from playing online (co-op or PvP) because dying in body form lowers WT, which sucks b/c playing with friends is one of the best parts of this series. At least PBWT is easy to get.

I think I wasted a few stones trying to get the world tendency to pure black because I didn’t go back to the nexus each time, I was in offline mode. I used 8, died in human form 9 times total. I happened to check and pay attention to the gauge a few times (~every 2nd death), I saw the gauge go down twice and then it didn’t seem to move. I died again in human form and it didn’t go down again so I started returning to the nexus each time. Play it safe unless you know for sure.

Did bluepoint add more items in pure white and black tendency than just the sodden ring? That’s the only one I know of and I made sure to grab it but I’m now wondering if I’ve been missing other items when I reach pure white/black and just go straight for the events that I know from the original… anyone?

I started playing the new one and I genuinely can’t see a difference in my world tendency after defeating the first boss of each world even though I could in the original. Making it even more difficult to tell in the remake is a baffling decision.

Most garbage mechanic. I know it’s too give the game replay value but did they have too make it so complicated to switch tendencies? And on top of that not explain it. Should have fixed it or completely done away with it for the remake. Same goes for the healthbar mechanic.

What a great mechanic – being in soul form at any point you get invaded either by R1 spammers with crusher or mage buff meta firestorm. Instantly negates the +30 you get from killing a boss which you can’t easily get back if you’re going for PWWT. Suppose it’s my fault for not instantly going back to nexus and throwing myself off the top. I love Souls and that includes this beautiful remake but honestly what a garbage mechanic

I’m PureWhite World tendancy in all, but when I couldnt get ceramic coind in 4-1, I seem I’m one notch off PureWhite. I must have died in body form in ng+ without recalling. I just read that with patch 1.0.0.4 , that invading using black stone and password based server doesnt work anymore. Anyone hear try that. If thats true. how best to get to PWCT? do you have to go all black by killing NPC. then trying to kill the black NPC to get back to white?
do you need a new ng+ in between? or can you kill off some ingame npc to black… and then the black NPC will be there in the same play thru?

Due Respect i think the info about invading doesnt have impact in your world tendency is worng, i try in different worlds how my invading affect or no the world, in all the case i kill the host that make my WT blackest.. beside have not sense that my WT became black pure with only two deaths or without killing npcs. Any thoughts?

Might get roasted for this, does quitting out while being invaded affect WT? Forget to suicide before grinding at Ritual Path and got invaded, didn’t want to lose tendency so I quit out. Now Archdemon is dead and I’m not pure white.

Interesting glitch someone found that I’m too lazy to fix the table for. The WT points for killing the Maneaters are divided equally between them: you get 22.5% for killing the first one and 22.5% for killing the second. This works in both the PS3 version and the Remake.
This means you can get PWWT in World 3 without ever actually defeating the Maneaters – so long as you can kill one in soul form, you can repeatedly kill the first Maneater (dying in between) to get PWWT. You can use this to host fight clubs at lower levels in 3-2 without having to worry about your WT going down from dying in body form.ReplyReplies (1)

Here is the breakdown for world tendency
Start=0
PW=90
PB=-90
Killing a boss gives +45
Dying in body form gives -30
Killing a boss with blue phantom gives +15 per phantom in addition to the 45
Helping another player kill a boss
Gives +0 so coop is only good for getting body form or WCT for killing invaders (I don’t know if killing invaders helps with your WT)
As explained before killing the NPC BP and primival demon can get you from -100 to +65
So long as you don’t teleport

Final update: I have confirmed that the method of killing the PB and primival demon at PBWT without teleporting and before the third boss of a world will bring back your WT to white then after killing the third boss, your WT will be PWWT. This method works in all worlds, now to do it in NG+ to get 26 ceramic coins

Update on my previous comment: I tested with world 4 and I succeeded, and apparently the gargoyle cutscene is now replayable meaning you can do the same on world 3, so time to fight BP rydell

As long as you play your cards right you can get PWWT then shift it to PBWT then back to PWWT again. I did this in world 2 after getting PWWT from flamelurker
Then suiciding 7 times in body form, after that I teleported to spider arch stone and killed BP scirvr for TOB, then suicided. From there I backtracked to the start of the world w/o teleporting and killed primival demon. This nets you +65% (WWT). After that all you need to do is kill dragon God. This method should work on every world except world 3

The part about not losing white WT points for killing the host is wrong, at least in the remake. You only lose around a point at a time, but it can be enough to disqualify you from PWWT. I did a bunch of Old Monk invasions on a character that had never done any WT events in World 3: no boss kills, never died in body form, never killed any phantom players. After around 20-30 successful invasions (with a low-level Large Sword of Moonlight build) my world tendency shifted from Neutral to Neutral Black.

My mistake, teleportation within the same world make the change od tendancy effective. So to get BLack Phantom+Primeval Demon, the player have to walk without teleportation. But he can try again if he die.

Very important detail : world tendency changes are valided in the Nexus. If you’re not leaving the world where you’re in, the effects won’t append yet.
Frst example : if you die repeatedly die to get Pure Black Tendency you will see the result only by passing by the Nexus.
Second example : if you kill the Black Phantom NPC of a World in Pure Black Tendency, you can still use teleportaion within the world to get the Primeval Demon (which should diseapear with the Tendancy change) to get far whiter tendency (usefull in world 1, 2, 3, 4 where the two locations are very far). Also you can die and retry for Primeval as long as you don’t go in the Nexus.ReplyReplies (1)10
