Encanto

Encanto (also known as Encanto: A Magical World in the Philippines) is a 2021 American computer-animated musical fantasy comedy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The 60th film produced by the studio, Encanto was directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, co-directed by Charise Castro Smith who co-wrote the screenplay with Bush, and produced by Yvett Merino and Clark Spencer, with original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Encanto follows a multigenerational Colombian family, the Madrigals, helmed by a matriarch whose children and grandchildren—except for Mirabel Madrigal (Beatriz)—receive magical gifts from a “miracle” that helps them serve the people in their rural community called “the Encanto”. When Mirabel learns that the family is losing their magic, she sets out to find out what is happening, to save her family and their magical house.

The film premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 3, 2021, and was released in the United States and Canadian theatres on November 24 over a 30-day theatrical run in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It underperformed theatrically, grossing over $234 million worldwide, but achieved wider commercial success after its release to Disney+ on December 24, 2021.

The movie’s soundtrack was released almost a week prior to its international theatrical releases by Walt Disney Records on November 19, 2021. The film’s eight original songs were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and produced by Mike Elizondo, recorded by various singers. The songs ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ and ‘Surface Pressure’ became the movie’s most successful songs upon its release on Disney+.

The songs ‘Colombia, Mi Encanto’ and ‘Dos Oruguitas’, well as its English language version ‘Two Oruguitas’, were not dubbed in a great majority of languages, although, ‘Dos Oruguitas’ was dubbed in a select few.

Trivia

• Like Coco, Encanto did not receive European Spanish and Catalan dubs due to the strong Latin American setting of the movie.
• Only the trailer of the movie was dubbed in Slovene. An actual dub of the film was not produced, but the film was still shown in theaters in Slovenia in November 2021. This information was confirmed by the film’s distributor, Blitz Slovenia.
• The song We Don’t Talk About Bruno was dubbed in Isan: however, only this song was dubbed, with the movie itself not receiving a full dub in the language[17].
