Netflix has been dubbed the ultimate Grinch after a modern classic Christmas movie disappeared from the streaming platform’s UK service on December 1.
The 2000 film How The Grinch Stole Christmas was available on Netflix across the UK until the end of November – but then disappeared just as the festive season kicked in.
People took to social media to voice their unhappiness, claiming Netflix’s heart, is perhaps, two sizes too small.
The discontent started in low, then it started to grow.
One person said: “Netflix took the Grinch off today. I watched it last night. It’s my favourite film of all time right, but today is the first of December and they took the Grinch off.”
Another user asked: “How is it that I pay for FIVE different streaming services and not one of them has the Grinch available in December???”
A third claimed her children were crying because they couldn’t watch the film, starring Jim Carrey and Taylor Momsen.
She wrote: “Imagine channeling your inner Scrooge and ruining Christmas by taking the Grinch off your platform… Thanks @NetflixUK kids crying.”
Someone else added: “@NetflixUK How come you guys have taken the Grinch off Netflix on the 1st December? It was on there yesterday. I don’t think the Grinch stole Christmas, you guys have.”
Netflix did give warning that the film was to be taken off – and the move is likely to be down to expired licences as other streaming services and broadcasters could have paid more to feature The Grinch over Christmas.
The Netflix Help Centre reads: “Though we strive to keep the content you want to see, we acquire licensing rights for TV shows and movies for a certain period of time – not indefinitely – so some titles do leave Netflix.
“If a TV show or movie you love is leaving, it indicates that our licensing agreement with the content provider is about to end.”
