Analysis of the Family Agreste Portrait

Quarantine strikes again and since the Agreste family portrait has fascinated me for a loooong while now I decided to put my thoughts into words and write another essay x3

The amount of informations we get out if it is amazing and its not only highlighting the absolute TRAGEDY it is that this family is about to face such a horrible fall out, it also hints at the former family dynamic before everything went to hell.

So make yourself comfortable and get something to drink, because we will be here for a while.

Here we go: My analysis of this beauty of a fictional portrait

I happened to notice something else while reading this too.

(And I hope I didn’t just accidentally skip over something you already mentioned here.)

But going back to the heart of the portrait and the placement of their hands. You brought up how Adrien is disconnected from his father cause he isn’t reaching out to him with his other hand.

The one hand outside the heart.

The one hand that now holds something that Gabriel will reach out for.

that hand is the hand that is meant to reach out for ladybug 🥺

but also this analysis is so on point and excellently done but i can’t stop myself i’m on the shady emilie train so i can’t help but look at these visuals from that perspective

emilie and adrien having a pure bond is one interpretation, but the other is that emilie cultivated her relationships with adrien and gabriel separately in a way that they were both dependent on her for affection and failed to establish a bond with each other. emilie could have promoted father son time, could have encouraged a family dynamic where everyone was connected, but in this portrait, she is knowingly the one facing her son and husband while they don’t face each other. whether that is because she is intentionally playing them against each other to ensure they are loyal to her above anyone else, or because she feels powerless to change the dynamic… we have no way of knowing

gabriel doesn’t know how to fix his family in any way besides bringing emilie back. at best, this means emilie was trying to be a good wife and mother the only way she could, and her solution to any tension in her family was to smooth things over and give them both enough affection that they didn’t need to form a bond outside of her. at worst? she knew exactly what she was doing and made sure their separate relationships with her were stronger than the one they had with each other

(bringing it back to my first sentence, this could have really interesting implications for adrien if she was brought back… adrien’s one hand is free to reach out to ladybug, but the other is still reaching back to his mother…)
