Airline travel policies are expected to change. Until changes are made, families are stuck with current policies that often put them at a disadvantage.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Proposed travel guidelines from the Department of Transportation aim to make your airline commute easier.
Something we all wish for this holiday season.
“It’s always terrible getting back to Memphis from the airport and that’s because of delays,” said Memphian James James.
He’s not the only one with a headache.
Consumers flooded the Department of Transportation with thousands of complaints about their inability to get refunds as airlines canceled large numbers of flights – following the outbreak of the pandemic.
“We have to fit more into the airline’s agenda or whatever the airline is up to than what we, the ticket buyer, are up to,” James said. “This is definitely not good at all.”
The transport agency proposes updated refunds for airline tickets and consumer protection.
One proposal states that where an airline has canceled a scheduled flight or made a significant change to a scheduled flight, it is unfair business practice for an airline to refuse a requested refund.
“It seems like there aren’t enough wheelchairs or enough wheelchair assistance,” said traveler Michael McClain.
The aviator, who was visiting a Colorado family, said he had to pay nearly $400 for a new flight after missing a Frontier flight with few wheelchairs available.
“I think they would have a better policy, if you miss that flight you don’t get a refund, but we put you on another flight…instead of having to pay for a whole different ticket,” McClain said.
Before any guidelines go into effect, a public comment period has been extended to December 16th.
