Noemi Gonzalez, Seidy López share details on ‘Selena: The Series’ roles

The highly-anticipated Selena: The Series will premiere on Netflix this Friday, Dec. 4. The series is a coming of age story about late Latin music icon Selena.

The show focuses more on the Quintanilla family than the Selena movie did when it was released in 1997. It goes more in-depth about the relationship within the family, growing up in South Texas, and the sacrifice of life on the road with Los Dinos.

Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, is portrayed by East Los High actress Noemi Gonzalez. She spoke about the role in the series with an interview with Emmy Award-winning film critic Manny The Movie Guy.

“I mean how can you not be interested in such an iconic story,” she said. “Being a Chicana it certainly resonated with me with her experience as a Tejano and my experience as a Chicana. To follow in the arts the way Selena followed in music it’s just been such a blessing that I get to give back to Selena in any way shape or form with my portrayal with my interpretation of Suzette, her best friend, sister, and drummer.”

Marcella Quintanilla, Selena’s mom, is portrayed by Seidy López, who also starred in the Selena movie as Debra, Selena’s friend that tries on dresses in the mall to attend the Grammy Awards. López is also known for her roles in Mi Vida Loca and Mi Familia.

López talked about portraying the matriarch of the Quintanilla family with Manny The Movie Guy. “It’s special to me to be able to step into this role because she was the foundation,” she said. “She represents that comfort, that place that they can come to, and feel safe and feel at home and feel that love that is so important…to be given that family place in the story was an honor…it was special.”

Selena: The Series premieres on Netflix on Dec. 4.
