Juul, an e-cigaratte manufacturer, has been blamed by a teen for his collapsed lung.
Vaping has been a popular alternative to smoking cigarettes for years, with data from the Office for National Statistics showing that 10.1% of people over the age of 16 were e-cigarette users in the UK in 2017.
So, with a teenager blaming toxic chemicals in his Juul pods for his devastating lung damage, how safe are the pods and other e-cigarettes?
What are the dangers of using Juul pods?
According to NHS Smokefree, research estimates that e-cigarettes are at least 95% less harmful than tobacco cigarettes.
However they also stipulate that they are not risk-free.
Recently, a teen in America, who previously vaped roughly one Juul pod every two days, blamed his collapsed lung on the pods.
The teen, Chance Ammirata, vaped roughly one Juul pod every two days, which is approximately the equivalent of 10 cigarettes-worth of nicotine a day.
Chance told The Daily Mail: ‘When they did the actual major surgery to reinflate my lungs, the surgeon said “whatever you’ve been smoking has been leaving these black dots on your lungs.”’
He added: ‘I’ve never smoked cigarettes – it’s the Juul.’
Now, Chance is warning others against vaping, saying: ‘I really didn’t believe in addiction or that it could affect me or that I could get addicted until I did.
‘And then I suffered the consequences of my decisions.’
A spokesperson for Juul told Metro.co.uk: ‘At JUUL Labs, we have no higher priority than consumer safety. While we do not have any details about this alleged incident beyond what we have read in recent media reports, we have robust safety monitoring systems in place and will vigilantly monitor for any evidence of safety issues as we continue to combat youth usage and eliminate cigarettes, the number one cause of preventable death in the world.
‘The growing library of scientific research of vapour products continues to reaffirm their potential public health benefit compared to combustible cigarettes, particularly when users completely switch from cigarettes to vapour. Numerous organisations, such as the American Cancer Society and Public Health England, support vaping products as a harm-reduced alternative to conventional tobacco and Public Health England concluded, following a landmark review of the available evidence, that e-cigarettes represent at least 95% harm reduction versus conventional cigarettes.
‘We fully support the call for additional long-term studies to fully assess the overall potential public health impact associated with vaping and are committed to ongoing research and innovation in vapour technology to ensure the quality and safety for adult smokers who use our product.’
How long do Juul pods last?
According to the Juul website, one pod is designed to last for roughly 200 puffs.
This may differ from person to person depending on the way they vape.
The charge on a Juul is supposed to last for around a day, or for as long as one pod does.
