She’s Madge the manicurist for the new millennium.
Stephanie Courtney, also known as “Flo,” the perky Progressive Insurance salesgirl with the red lipstick, is the commercial break’s new sweetheart.
And in an age when the DVR is said to have killed the television pitchman, Courtney is attaining TV ad icon status.
“I was floored at the response of people,” said Courtney in a telephone interview from her home in Los Angeles. “As an actress, you look at a commercial as one day of work and you do your one day and go home. I certainly never thought it would come to this.”
“This” is an ongoing ad campaign with Progressive, a “Flo the Progressive Girl” Facebook page almost 100,000 fans strong, a slew of Web sites dedicated to her, Twitter feeds, forums and loads of Internet chatter on Courtney and her alter-ego. She’s even a popular Halloween costume this year.
“When I auditioned, they told me that the part might become an ad campaign, but I was just like, ‘Well, let’s see how today goes,’ ” said Courtney, who thinks she landed the role because they “wanted a friendly face and a certain type of energy.”
Courtney, 39, grew up when TV commercial personalities were at their peak. Wrigley’s Doublemint Twins, Palmolive’s Madge, Life cereal’s little Mikey, Charmin’s Mr. Whipple, Dunkin’ Donuts’ Fred the Baker. But she never thought she’d join their ranks.
“What are you supposed to say, no? I mean, this is a great gig as far as spokespeople jobs go,” she said. “It’s also brought me some (financial) freedom.”
Courtney’s resume goes beyond pitching insurance. She was on the first season of AMC’s “Mad Men” (“I’m not on now, but I love watching it”) and is a member of the Groundlings, a comedy and improv theater in Los Angeles where she performs one to five shows a week. “It’s heaven to me,” she said.
As for commercial work, she’s pleased people aren’t changing the channel.
“I’m glad people aren’t mad at me for interrupting their programs,” she said. “It’s all a very pleasant surprise.”
