Shoe parts rubbing in this area can cause a problem with annoying noises. Finding ways to reduce friction between the sole and the insoles can make a difference.
If you have removable insoles it makes sense to use a product such as baby powder to help. Baby powder is a good product to use as it also soaks up any moisture which is trapped in the area which can be another source of the problem.
Simply take out the insoles and gently sprinkle the baby powder into the area of the footbed before replacing the insoles. Be careful not to overdo it with the talcum powder as you don’t want clouds of the product getting everywhere. Remember you can top up the talcum powder if you need to.
The reduction in friction, as well as moisture, should mean that your squeaky insoles are no more.

As new leather shoes can often be stiff and rigid because they are not broken in leather conditioner can be a great solution to stop shoes from squeaking as it helps to moisturize your footwear.
When your shoes are softer and more supple you are less likely to suffer from squeaky footwear.
Leather conditioner can also work on old shoes that are making noise. As shoes age they can get lose moisture which makes them stiffer and can cause them to crack. Leather conditioner can help to nourish the old leather and stop shoes from squeaking.
Check Your Shoes Laces to Stop The Irritating Footwear Sounds
There are a number of other different areas that you might need to look at if you have a squeaky shoe and one of those is your laces especially if you are wearing dress shoes.
It isn’t uncommon for some shoe laces to rub against the tongue of your shoe which makes your shoes squeak. Whilst this might be annoying this problem is a relatively easy fix.
All you need to do is rub some leather conditioner or saddle soap onto the tongue area of the shoe to see if that stops the squeaky noise.
If that doesn’t do the job check to see if you have your shoe laces tied too tightly. If they are loosen them slightly to see if this helps. You can also buy new shoe laces to see if that makes a difference.

Just remember that saddle soap can dry out your leather so it makes sense to follow up the application of saddle soap with a leather conditioner to keep your shoes in tip-top condition.
Lubricating Your Shoes Can Help
There are other products that can help you to lubricate your shoes so that they stop squeaking. WD40 for example is something that might work on some shoes.
Use it sparingly and place it on a cotton ball and gently work the lubricant into the inner sole of the shoe if you are hearing a noise from that area. Then place the insole back down to see if that helps. Try and avoid using WD40 on leather shoes in areas where the product could create an unsightly stain.
Coconut oil is another natural product that works in a similar fashion. Remember not to spread the oil everywhere otherwise, you are going to ruin the insoles and end up with slimy and soggy feet.
Petroleum Jelly is another option as well. A little will go a long way so smear a small amount on the areas where you are hearing the squeaking sounds.
If Your Shoes are Making Annoying Sounds Check for Moisture
We’re already touched on the problems of moisture but we thought it was important to really stress how this can impact your footwear.
Moisture from rain, snow or even sweat can permeate into not only the leather but the insole and start to cause problems. When they are absorbing moisture some of that moisture gets trapped inside your footwear and causes a squeaky shoe.
Whilst baby powder might help with minor moisture problems you really need to let your shoe dry properly to test if that is the source of your noise problems.
One thing that we have heard people suggest is placing your shoes into the dryer with some fabric conditioner in order to dry out your shoes. This can be a very bad idea! Do you really want to place brand new and expensive shoes into a tumble dryer that could ruin them? This seems like an idea that might work if you have old shoes that you no longer care about but with new shoes, there are so many better solutions.
Air drying shoes for a few days can work or if you need them more quickly we always recommend buying a pair of shoe and boot dryers. These are great devices that can dry out your shoes overnight without damaging them. If you want to go one step further you can even buy a product that freshens them as well and prevents shoe odor.
Just place your shoes onto the devices to let them dry gently overnight and you should have a pair of shoes that is ready to wear by the next morning.
How To Fix a Squeaky Shoe Heel That’s Making Noise
If your shoes squeak another place that you should check is the heel of your shoe. Sometimes loose heels can be the source of the problem.
The top part of the heel that connects to the shoe soles can become loose causing the squeaking noise that drives you mad. In most cases, you should be able to stick the shoes back together by either using super glue or Shoo Goo Repair Adhesive.
If you feel the repair is beyond you or your shoes are expensive taking them to a local cobbler to get them fixed might be a better option.
Fix Squeaky Shoes That Have New Rubber Soles
Getting a new pair of shoes that are box fresh is always a great moment but new shoes create another problem and that is noise.
New squeaky shoes are often caused by the smooth rubber sole on your shoe making a sound on other smooth floor surfaces. You won’t hear the noise as much on carpet but you are likely to hear it on tiles, linoleum or wood floors and it can drive you mad.
To stop your shoe squeaking you need to do something to rough up the sole of your shoe. Obviously by wearing them in this sound will stop over time but if you want to stop shoes squeaking in the short term then you can use a rubber sole spray like Slip Grip to help increase traction.
Using Fine Grit Sandpaper to Rough Up Shoe Soles
Another way to solve the problem of perfectly new rubber or leather soles is to buy some sandpaper from the local hardware store.
Gently rub the fine sandpaper over the shoe bottoms in order to make them rougher. Obviously, the amount that you need to do this will vary from shoe to shoe.
Common sense says that the best thing to do is test this bit by bit. So don’t go crazy scrubbing away at the soles so that they look terrible. Usually, a small amount of rough surface is enough to stop the sound of new squeaky shoes.
Use A Dryer Sheet to Solve The Problem
An even gentler approach you can take to resolving the problem is heading to your laundry room and taking out the dryer sheets to use on the squeaking noise.
Whilst you might think that a dryer sheet is only good for clothes it can be a great little product for solving two of the issues with squeaky shoes.
Firstly rubbing a dryer sheet over the base of rubber shoes is enough to get the shoes to stop the noise. You might have to repeat this for the first few times you wear the shoe but it does work.
If your insole is the problem then some people place the dryer sheet in between the sole and their insole to stop the friction and noise. Not only does it solve the noise issue but it also makes your shoes smell nice which is a win-win situation.
Glue Down a Loose Insole
Squeaky shoes caused by a loose insole can also be the culprit when it comes to the noise made from shoes. Some shoe insoles are not removable and should be glued down inside the shoes but others can be taken out which allows them to move more easily. Manufacturing defects can also cause the problem as the shoe insole is not adhering to the sole properly.
This is a relatively easy problem to solve in most cases as all you need to do is to glue the loose insole down to prevent it from moving around. When the adhesive has done its job you should find that the noise from the squeaking shoes has stopped.
If In Doubt Use Shoe Repair Shops

Whilst many problems can be solved by amateurs with our DIY hacks there are some circumstances where it is not worth doing it your way. This is especially the case if your shoes are expensive. Expensive shoes really need repairs from a professional in many cases so that they don’t get ruined.
Cobblers are also great at helping solve problems that you can’t figure out yourself.
