How to Export Facebook Messages

This wikiHow teaches you how to save parts of a Facebook Messenger conversation so you can view it offline. On mobile, you can do this by taking a screenshot of the conversation. On the computer, we can save the conversation as a PDF file.

On mobile app

Open Messenger. The app has a blue chat bubble icon with lightning inside. You can usually find it on the home screen or in the app drawer (Android).

Select a conversation. The conversation will open on the screen.

Scroll down to the section of the conversation you want to save.

Take a screenshot. This process will vary depending on the device.

Android : Not all Android devices are the same, but often you can take a screenshot by simultaneously pressing the power and volume down buttons.
iPhone/iPad : Hold down the Sleep/Wake button on the side or top of the device, then press and release the Home button.

On Windows or macOS

Go to https://www.facebook.com using a web browser. You can use a web browser (for example, Safari or Chrome) to access Facebook on your computer.

If you are not logged in, you will need to enter your Facebook username and password to do so.

Go to https://m.facebook.com/messages . This is the mobile web version of Facebook Messenger, so the interface may look a bit funny on the browser you use.

Click on the conversation you want to export. You should now see some of the last messages in the chat.

Click See Older Messages… to view more messages. This link is at the top of the chat. You need to click here until you see the dialogue to save.

Export chats to PDF files. The process will be slightly different, depending on the web browser:

Safari or Chrome on macOS: Press ⌘ Command + P to open the Print dialog, then click Open PDF in Preview . After the document opens in Preview, go to File > Save As and enter a name for the file.
Firefox on macOS: Click File at the top of the screen, then choose Export as PDF… . Enter a name for the conversation in the “Save As” box and then click Save .
Chrome on Windows: Press Ctrl + P , click Change below the printer name, select Save as PDF , and then click Save .
