This is an article that shows you how to delete files on your computer using commands in Command Prompt.
Steps
Prepare before deleting files
- If you don’t know where the file is saved, enter the file name in the Start search bar, then right click on the file when you see it displayed, continue to click Open file location . to be taken directly to the file location.
- The only exception to this rule is when you try to delete files from the “System32” folder – the Windows system files folder. In this case, you will not move the file.
- .txt – Text file (created in Notepad).
- .docx – Microsoft Word file.
- .jpg or .png – Image file.
- .mov, .wmv, .mp4 – Video file.
- .mp3, .wav – Audio file.
- .exe – An executable file (such as an installation file).
- .lnk – Shortcut file. Deleting a program’s shortcut will not remove the program from your computer.
Delete files using Command Prompt
- Hold down the ⊞ Win key and press X , then click Command Prompt above the Start button.
- Right-click the Start button in the lower-left corner of the screen, then click Command Prompt in the currently displayed window.
- Type “Command Prompt” into the Start menu search bar (for Windows 8, you’ll move your mouse pointer to the upper-right corner of the screen and click the magnifying glass icon), and then click the “Command” icon. prompt” when you see it appear on the screen.
- Open the “Run” application from the Start menu, then type “cmd” and click OK .
- You can do many other ways to change the folder name in Command Prompt if needed.
- Opening the Command Prompt in “Administrator” mode will change the directory to the “System32” file. Therefore, you should not open Command Prompt in “Administrator” mode unless your file is stored in the “System32” folder.
- For example, if the image file is named “icecream”, you would enter the command icecream.png ; if the text file is named “notes”, your command will be notes.txt .
- For filenames with spaces, you would enclose the filename in quotes: "I like turtles.jpg" instead of I_like_turtles.jpg .
- To delete all files with the same extension on your desktop (such as all text files), you would enter *.filetype with “filetype” as the file’s extension (for example, * .txt ).
- Since the “del” command directly deletes the file from the hard drive, you don’t need to delete the file in the recycle bin again.
Advice
- You should use your system’s file manager to delete files, and only use the Command Prompt when deleting files requires more aggressive action.
Warning
- If you delete even a single system file, the computer may stop working.
- Using Command Prompt to delete files will not move the file to the recycle bin.
