Dry and cracked finger skin is not only embarrassing, but also painful and inconvenient in daily life. Fortunately, often you can treat chapped skin at home without any significant medical help. While it may take some time, with proper care, your skin will be as soft and smooth as ever. Continue taking care of your skin after it heals to prevent it from happening again. [1] X Research Source
Steps
Hand washing
- Bar soaps are often more drying to the skin than liquid soaps, even if they contain moisturizing ingredients. If you prefer bar soap, look for one that is oil-based or contains soothing ingredients, such as aloe or oats.
- Avoid using antibacterial gels to wash your hands. These products contain alcohol, which can make the skin even drier and more chapped. [3] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source
- You should also use warm water when bathing or showering, especially if other areas of your body are also dry.
- You can also switch to a gentle liquid body wash, especially if other areas of your skin are also dry. Shower gels for babies and children are naturally mild and often fragrance-free.
- Soft cotton towels or handkerchiefs are gentler on the skin than paper towels. You should also never use a hand dryer when the skin on your hands is cracked – the heat will make the skin dry and make the condition worse.
Tip: Bring a handkerchief to wipe your hands in public places that only have dryers and paper towels.
Skin moisturizing
- Some fragrances and chemicals can also cause allergies, which is also a problem with dry skin. If you’ve used scented lotions in the past, that’s probably part of the reason your fingers are chapped.
- Dab a small amount of moisturizer all over your hands and dab into skin instead of rubbing to prevent further flaking and chapping.
Tips: After the moisturizer has absorbed into the skin, gently massage your hands and fingers with even pressure to help the moisturizer penetrate deeper. If the skin is still dry, you can apply more cream with the above steps.
- Ointments that contain petroleum jelly will lock in moisture and help heal cracked skin better than anything else. However, these ointments are often greasy and can be inconvenient during daytime activities.
Tip: When needed, a pair of cotton socks is also helpful if you don’t have the proper gloves. It’s just that they can slip off while you sleep, and the ointment can stick to the sheets.
Protect the skin
- Lining latex gloves are generally better for the skin, as the rubber can rub against the skin, causing further dryness and cracking.
- Make sure gloves are completely dry before putting them on.
Tip: If you wear disposable gloves, grasp the cuffs of the gloves when taking them off so that the cleaning product chemicals don’t touch your skin. Wash the outside of the gloves and hang them to dry.
- Most liquid dressings come with a brush. Wash hands and pat dry before dressing. You may need to wait 1 minute to make sure the skin is completely dry, then use a brush to apply the liquid bandage to the deep cracks in the skin.
- Wait 1 minute for the ice to dry. Gently pull the leather to see if the edge of the skin next to the crack has moved. If so, you need to do another layer of scanning.
- Liquid bandages are water resistant and can be kept for up to a week.
- If possible, wash your hands and apply moisturizer before putting on gloves.
- Wash gloves at least once a week with an unscented soap made for sensitive skin.
Advice
- If home remedies do not help relieve your symptoms, consult your doctor. Chapped skin can be a symptom of another underlying medical condition, such as eczema. [13] X Trusted Source American Academy of Dermatpogy Go to Source
- Apply cool compresses to dry skin if itching occurs, then apply hydrocortisone cream to soothe inflamed skin. [14] X Research Source
