Dragonflies are large, interesting, attractive and pleasing-looking insects. They are also a good helper in the garden thanks to their ability to control the number of mosquitoes. Dragonflies love to find areas of water, so the best way to attract them to your yard is to create a water source.
Steps
Choose a water source
- The lake needs to be at least 0.6 m deep so that dragonfly larvae can hide from predators such as raccoons.
- Water sources need to have low, shallow banks. Low slopes create favorable conditions for plants to grow.
- A pontoon pool placed in the garden can also attract dragonflies to lay eggs. Wooden crates for wine cut in half are also a good idea.
- You can find prefabricated pools at home decor stores, and inflatable pools at most toy stores or major stores. Both of these are available online.
- Most areas that are not too arid are located relatively close to a water source with dragonflies.
Add the right elements
- Grow both submerged and floating plants. Dragonflies will live in underwater plants as larvae and perch on tall trees as adults.
- Try growing eel grass, green arhats, waterweed, weasel tails, water chives, water lilies, and lotus flowers.
- You can find aquatic plants at aquatic plant stores and online.
- For example, you can plant plants like lobelia, seedbox or button bush.
- You can also let weeds and bushes grow naturally around the lake.
- You can try a combination of dark and light colored stones. Dragonflies can love either type of rock.
- You can use twigs taken from nearby trees or bamboo trees that are often used to make a trellis for trees and vegetables.
Consider other factors
- Typically, you will need to purchase additional filters for outdoor fountains.
- You can try looking at flowers such as blackberry, chrysanthemum, chrysanthemum, cat mint, chrysanthemum bar, hydrangea, sage, marigold.
Warning
- Be aware of invasive plants and do not plant them in the aquarium.
- Do not mow the grass around the pond for dragonflies.
- Do not spray herbicides or pesticides around dragonfly habitats. Dragonflies will not use contaminated water, and you may accidentally kill their larvae.
- Avoid prefabricated pools with no slopes.
