Are you in need of a Santa Claus drawing to make a Christmas greeting card or decoration? Santa Claus is also relatively easy to draw. Let’s start by sketching Santa’s body with simple shapes. Add a few more details on his funny face and belly like a bowl of rice. Finish with coloring, and you’ll have a perfect Santa drawing.
Steps
Sketch the body of Santa Claus
- Draw an oval that crosses the first circle. The top half of the oval will be slightly overlapped with the circle for the head.
- Draw guide lines for the face. Draw a vertical line down the center of the circle and a horizontal line through it. The horizontal line will be level with the top of the oval. These lines will help you determine where to draw the eyes and nose.
- Draw 2 more horizontal lines near the bottom of the circle to make the mouth.
- Use a pencil to draw the main lines. Draw lightly so you can easily erase the wrong lines afterwards.
- The upper circle will be Santa’s chest. Draw so that it is round and slightly larger than the head.
- The bottom circle will be Santa’s belly. This circle needs to be drawn one and a half times larger than the chest circle.
- By this time Santa Claus is shaped like a snowman.
- It’s okay if the ovals for the arms overlap the circle for the chest. In the end you will erase the intersecting lines, and the Santa Claus image will have more depth.
- Santa has a heavier upper body, which means his upper body will be larger than his lower body. Try to draw these ovals no longer than the rest of the body.
- When drawing Santa’s legs, you’ll start from the top two ovals (as thighs) at the widest point, close to the outer edge of the belly. Draw Santa’s legs slightly outstretched.
Draw Santa’s face
- Draw the nose with an almost circular loop but leave the top open. [2] X Research Source
- Draw two nostrils. Draw a C shape on either side of Santa’s round nose, a forward C for the right side of the nose, an inverted C for the left side of the nose.
- To draw a mustache for the scale, you can draw a small dot in the center below the nose, then draw zigzag lines so that the strokes meet at that point when drawing the lower part of the mustache.
- Draw 2 curved lines on either side, starting at the top of the nose. Draw these two curves down to near the edge of the mustache. These are Santa’s cheeks.
- If you want Santa to look less cartoonish, you can draw his eyes with two smaller circles above his cheeks. Santa’s eyes won’t connect to his cheeks, and he looks more real. [3] X Research Sources
- Add pupils to the eyes. Draw 2 circles inside the eyes, a larger circle for the whites, a smaller circle for the pupils.
- If you like and have room, you can add smaller circles inside the pupils to make Santa’s eyes sparkle. Color the pupils.
- If there isn’t enough room to draw Santa’s thick eyebrows, you can draw two rounded rectangles above the eyes.
- The more zigzag the lines, the more cartoon Santa’s beard looks. If you want his beard to look more realistic, you can draw softer S-shaped strokes.
- Draw down so that the beard touches Santa’s chest.
- Extend the stroke from the fringe of the hat outward around the head and connect at the ears.
- When drawing upward curves to make the body of the hat, you can extend the body of the hat higher than the outline of Santa’s head for balance.
- Starting on one side of Santa’s head, draw a slightly inward curve. Leave this curve open instead of connecting to the hat stroke on the other side.
- Extend the stroke past the other edge of the hat to create the pointed end of the hat. Draw another cotton ball at the top of the hat. [4] X Research Sources
- To make Santa’s mouth and beard look more realistic, draw 2 chi lines extending from the tips of the mustache. But leave a small space, do not connect these strokes to the outer edge of the chin beard.
- Now it’s time to draw the sides of Santa’s face. Connect the top of the beard you just drew (protruding from the mustache) with 2 wavy vertical strokes on either side of Santa’s head. Extend these two curves up and join the bottom of the hat.
- If drawn correctly, Santa’s chin beard should wrap around his face.
Draw Santa’s clothes and color
- Fill in the outer edges of the circles and ovals drawn initially. Now it’s time to paint Santa’s body to make it look 3D.
- Draw only the outline of the shapes. Erase all overlapping lines to give the drawing depth.
- When you’re done, you’ll have a Santa Claus wearing a hat but no clothes.
- Start with the shirt. Draw the bottom of the shirt with a curved line on the outside of the sides of Santa’s legs. The strokes should be flared and knee-length. Continue drawing two curved lines upward and connecting at the navel area. The hem of the shirt also has a white frill similar to the hat.
- Draw more belts. The belt is a rectangle that curves slightly around Santa’s belly. The lower edge of the belt is where the two bodice meet at about the navel. Draw a square belt buckle in the middle and 2 “leeches” on either side of the pants.
- Add a button or two in the center of the shirt.
- Underneath the shirt are pants drawn with a few zigzag lines down. Santa Claus also has calf-high boots.
- Finally, draw 2 rectangular cuffs on both sleeves, and remember to draw two hands.
- Santa’s hat, shirt, pants and boots are all red. His boots are slightly darker than the other outfits.
- The frills on the hat and shirt, including the cuffs, will be white.
- You can paint your gloves and belt brown, or even green if you like.
Advice
- Draw lightly with a pencil so that you can easily erase when you make mistakes.
- Let’s draw leisurely. You may want to get it done quickly, but if you draw slowly, you’ll get more details right.
- If you want to color your drawing with markers/watercolours, you should use relatively thick paper and redo the darker lines before coloring.
