Prepare the “tool kit”

Straighten a hairpin. Break the hairpin upside down so you have a long metal stick. This will be the padlock, used to push the pins up.

Use the padlock to break the tip of the pin into a poke. Insert the pin into the keyway about 1 centimeter. The flat side of the pin will be facing up. Push the rest of the pin to the left, then the tip of the pin will be slightly bent. The tip of the pin only needs to be bent a few millimeters.

Your job is to use your hands to push each pin into the correct position, slowly rotating the lock shaft so that the pins cannot fall back down. Poke the padlock
Tuck the lever into the back half of the lock. Tuck the curved end into the back half of the lock, keeping the lever as low as possible while still trying to squeeze it all the way into the lock shaft.
Turn the lever slightly in the direction you would normally use to unlock. Using the lever as the key, turn the lock as if you were going to open the door. You won’t be able to rotate much but need to create this pressure. You need to maintain pressure on the lock throughout the opening, but don’t twist it too hard. You only need to apply enough force to turn the lever slightly, but don’t put pressure on the lock. Remember, you still need to keep the pins in the locking shaft loose enough to be able to push it up.
- If you can’t remember which way to turn the lock, try turning it both ways. The wrong direction of rotation will make a clicking sound, and you will feel a slight grinding.
Insert the poke with the curved end facing up, and fumble for the pin. Use the poke to move up and down to find the pin. They will be in the top half of the keyway. Push a few pins up, you will feel them move and fall. You have to shake the poke up and down slightly to push all the pins up, but some pins may not move, but you don’t need to worry. For now, count the number of pegs and notice which moves freely and which is stuck.

Find the first “blocking” pin and push it up until you hear a click. While checking the pins, look for any bars that won’t move. Keeping steady pressure on the lever, gently push it up until a clear “CLICK” is heard. This sound indicates that you have matched the bifurcation on the pin with the locking shaft, and now the pin is no longer blocking the locking shaft.
- You’ll see the lever rotate a little more once it’s pushed into place. That’s because there is a pin that no longer obstructs the locking shaft.
Find and repeat this process for the remaining pegs. After you push one of the pins up, the previous free pins will block. This is actually a good thing because it helps you figure out which pin to push next. Repeat this process until the lever can fully rotate the lock shaft and the door opens:
- Find the blocking pin, which cannot move much.
- Continuously turn the lever to press into the lock as if you were unlocking it.
- Gently push the latch up until you hear a click in the lock.

Adjust the pressure on the lever if you get stuck. This is the most common difficulty that unlockers encounter, because primarily you have to learn how to feel. If you turn the lever too hard, the pins will get stuck and you won’t be able to push them out of the lock shaft. If you turn the lever too lightly or accidentally loosen your grip, the pins will slide back down, and you will have to start over.
