This article shows you how to copy songs from a CD to your computer in MP3 format. The songs on a CD are usually in the CDA format – a file type that can only be played when the CD is inserted into the computer. You can create a copy of a CD using iTunes on Windows and Mac computers, or you can use Windows Media Player on a Windows computer with the program available.

Insert the CD into your computer’s CD drive with the sticker side facing up.

Open the iTunes app with a multicolored musical note icon on a white background.

Enable MP3 conversion in the following way:

  • Click Edit (on Windows) or iTunes (on Mac).
  • Click Preferences… (Options).
  • Click Import Settings… (Copy settings…)

Click the CD icon in the upper-left corner of the iTunes window. This will open the CD page allowing you to view the list of songs on the CD.

Select the songs on the CD. Click a song, and then press Ctrl + A (on Windows) or ⌘ Command + A (on Mac) to select all songs.

Choose Convert near the bottom of the File menu to open another menu.

Wait for the CD burning process to complete. Once the CD burning process is complete, you will hear a notification and the progress bar at the top of the iTunes window will also disappear.

Find the CD’s album in the iTunes library. Click the “Back” button in the upper-left corner of the iTunes window, then click the Albums tab and find the album you just copied to iTunes.

    • Windows Media Player is no longer supported by Microsoft after the founder’s update for Windows 10. Unless you installed Windows Media Player on Windows 7 and then updated to Windows 10 or downloaded the program before the Support is over, you must use iTunes to burn the CD.
