Are you a good person to save old newspapers? Have you just broken up with your girlfriend and want to artistically delete love letters? Or are you looking for a fun craft activity for a rainy day? Then you should try making paper. All you need is some old paper, water, a grid, and a blender.
Steps
Prepare
- Frame method: Stretch a mesh over a wooden frame (old picture frames are fine, or you can build your own) and press or nail the edges of the frame. Any fine mesh screen or filter with a pore size of about 1mm can be used. The net must be pulled tight. Make sure the frame is large enough to produce the size of paper you want. In addition, you will need to use additional pots, bins or trays that are larger than the frame.
- Tray method: Choose to buy disposable aluminum deep trays at the supermarket, or deep ceramic trays. Next, you cut a mesh similar to the shape of the bottom of the tray, but slightly larger in size.
- Paper can also be made entirely from grass and leaves; in fact that’s how people made paper before the 20th century! You have to cut the grass or leaves, soak them in caustic soda to create a corrosive reaction, then filter and grind into a pulp. Next, you pour the pulp into the mold. After the pulp dries, you can proudly say, “This paper doesn’t need to be cut down!”.
Create pulp
- If you want to create solid colored paper, you’ll choose to use paper that doesn’t have a lot of bold ink, uses a lot of “pulp” and adds food coloring. Your finished product will have a dark side and a light color on the other. Both sides of the paper can be used depending on the purpose, but the light side is better for writing.
- If you want to create white paper, you will add half a cup of white vinegar to the pulp mixture.
- Paper mill. Tear up the paper and put it in the blender until it’s almost half full. Add warm water to the blender. You’ll first run the blender on a “slow” speed, then speed it up until the pulp is smooth and even – it takes about 30 to 40 seconds to get rid of any large pieces of paper.
- Paper mill. If you have a pestle and mortar (or similar tool, like a spatula and metal bowl), you can crush the paper by hand. Handle handfuls of paper at a time and try to make the pulp a texture similar to the consistency of soaked oats.
Papermaking
- If you choose the frame method, you will fill the pot with water and add the pulp before you dip the frame in.
- If the tray method is selected, place the mesh under the tray before adding the water and pulp.
- Without the addition of starch, the paper will be very absorbent and your ink will quickly smudge. If this happens, you will soak the paper in a mixture of water and gelatin quickly and then let it dry.
- Frame Method: After the water has stopped flowing (or nearly so), gently place a piece of cloth (preferably felt or flannel) or a Formica board (smooth surface facing down) on it. frame just above “paper”. Gently press down to squeeze out excess water. Use the sponge to squeeze the water on the other side of the mesh and occasionally squeeze out the water in the sponge.
- Tray method: Spread the towel on a flat surface and place the mesh (with the paper on it) on half of the surface of the towel. Fold the rest of the towel to cover the paper. Use the iron on low heat setting gently on the towel. You should see some steam coming out of the paper.
Completed
- Gently remove the fabric or formica board from the frame. The wet paper may now have adhered to the fabric. If the paper is still clinging to the net, you may have pulled the fabric too quickly or not fully dried the water.
- You can press the paper that is about to dry by placing a piece of cloth or another Formica board on top and gently pressing it. This will make the paper smoother and thinner. Leave the cloth or board in place while waiting for the paper to dry.
- Peel the paper off the Formica cloth or board (for the framing method). Wait until the paper is completely dry and peel it off gently.
- Ironing (optional): While the paper is still damp, but can be safely removed from the fabric/board, you will use a high-heat iron to help the paper dry faster and get a nice shine. .
Advice
- For a more artistic look, you can also add some plant materials to the paper, such as some petals, leaves, or green grass. The beautiful effect of the finished product will motivate you to create more paper, and each sheet is unique.
- If you dry the paper on the fabric, it will take on the color and pattern of that material; Therefore, you should be careful with the materials you use. Smooth Formica board is the best choice if you want to create writing paper with a smooth flat surface.
- To squeeze all the water out of the paper, you can place a cloth over the surface of the paper and press with a piece of foam – be gentle!
- Stencils can be used instead of fabric or Formica wood panels
- If you are having trouble removing the paper from the frame, you can gently turn the frame upside down and try to peel the paper off the fabric or Formica board.
- You can add lint to the pulp mix, but don’t make paper out of lint because it won’t have enough stiffness.
- You can add a little glitter to give the paper some sparkle.

- Any paper that is wax-free (i.e. paper that has no shine)
- Wooden frame or aluminum tray
