Having a Minecraft map available will change the game when you play in multiplayer or survival mode. Create a map

Make sure you have a crafting table and a furnace. You’ll need a crafting table to create the map and its parts, and you’ll use the furnace to create the compass that comes with the map.

Prepare resources. To create a map, you need the following items:

Sugar Canes – You need 9 sugar canes. Sugarcane are light green plants that usually grow near water.
Iron ore – You need 4 iron ore. These are gray blocks with orange streaks. You can dig iron ore with as little as a stone pickaxe.
Redstone – You need a stack of redstone. Redstone is found on the 16th floor and below, so you have to dig deep to find this material. It is a gray stone with bright red spots.
Fuel – Anything that can be burned will do. You can get 4 wood blocks, one charcoal or coal block.

Open the furnace. Right click (on desktop), push the left switch (on console) or tap (on mobile) the furnace to open it.

Melt the iron bars. Add iron ore to the box above the furnace interface, then add fuel to the box below. The furnace will operate automatically.

Move the iron bar to the inventory. Select the iron bar, and then select an empty cell in the inventory.

On the mobile version of Minecraft, touching something is the way to move it to the inventory.

Create a compass. Place the stack of redstone in the center slot of the crafting table, and then place the iron in the box directly above, below, to the left and right of that tile. You will see the compass icon show up.

Move the compass into the inventory. Select the compass, and then select the luggage.

Transfer paper to baggage.

Create a map. Place the compass in the slot in the center of the crafting table, and then place a sheet of paper in each of the remaining empty squares (8 sheets total). You should see a brown paper appear; it’s the map icon.

Move the map to the inventory. Now that the map has been created, you can start adding information to it.

Use the map

Bring a map. Select the map in the equipment bar at the bottom of the screen to do this. The map will not have information when it is created, but you can gradually add it by moving around the world with the map in hand.

Maps will not automatically display information unless you take it with you while traveling around the world.

Open the map screen. Right click or push the left switch, or touch and hold the screen (on mobile devices). You will see the map immediately after this action.

On mobile devices, you can also tap Create Map if you see this option at the bottom of the screen.
Wait a while for the map to populate the first time you use it.
The map will start adding the direction you’re looking at. North is always above the map.

Walk around while using the map. You will see the world displayed on the map from top to bottom. The first map you create is 1:1 to the real world, so each point on the map represents a block in the world.

If you use the map while walking, you will see the edges of the map begin to appear data.
The original map is filled with information when there is no space left. The map doesn’t automatically show more space, so you need to expand the map to see more.

Expand the map

Learn how to expand the map. The original map has a default size; you can increase the map size up to 4x (each time will double) for a more viewable world map.

You cannot expand the map in the Legacy Conspe version of Minecraft. This is a version of Minecraft that was not released on Xbox 360/One and PlayStation 3/4.

Create more paper, if needed. You need 8 sheets of paper for each zoom level (up to 32 sheets of paper). If you don’t have at least 8 sheets of paper, create more before continuing.

Wrap paper around the map. Click the stack of paper, and then right-click each empty box around the map at least once.

On a mobile device, tap the box in the center of the interface, then tap paper.

Move the map you just displayed into the inventory. You will see a yellow map icon displayed to the right of the crafting table interface; click on it, then click on the baggage.

Repeat this process up to three times. By placing the enlarged map in the center of the crafting table and placing more paper around, you can zoom in on the map again. After the first expansion, you have the opportunity to go through this process three more times.

Use the map to add world information. By using the map while you go around, world locations will be added to the map.

Advice

You can create wall maps by placing frames on the wall, selecting the map, selecting the frame, and repeating the operation with maps of other parts of the world.
You can only use the map in the Overworld (Official World), and not in The Nether or The End.
If you create a map in the underground world, the map will be black. Create a map at the portal, and the portal will show up in the center of the map. You can use the player position marker to see where you are relative to the portal.
You can also find maps in the Cartographer’s chest in the villages.

Warning

If you are killed by mobs (living creatures) or for other reasons, the map will be dropped along with the rest of your inventory. Always be careful when adding information to the world.
