Why go?
Since Roman times, people have sought out Abano Terme’s healing thermal waters. This spa town’s curative reputation is summed up by its name, coming from the Greek term ‘à ponos’, which means ‘to take away pain’. The hallowed water begins its journey as rain falling on the Lessini Mountains, before flowing underground for nearly 30 years. Soaking up minerals along the way, it’s then used for everything from therapeutic pools to hotel heating.
The neighbouring city of Padua makes for a wonderful day trip
At the heart of the ancient town is a modern pedestrianised area where you can people-watch to your heart’s content and admire the many water features. During the summer months, there are concerts and dance festivals like the prestigious Abano Danza, featuring internationally renowned ballet performers. Padua, the oldest city in Northern Italy, is just a few miles away from Abano and makes for a great day trip.
When to go?
If you’re just looking to soak in the warm thermal waters, there’s no bad time to visit. To keep toasty outside the hot springs, plan a trip between May and September for the best chance to catch sunshine and regular local events.
