Why go?

In Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, postmodern skyscrapers rise up over ancient city walls and Soviet-era apartment blocks sit alongside 14th-century hammams. The 900-year-old Maiden Tower sits within the narrow alleyways of the Old Town – a symbol of the city’s past – while shiny buildings like the Flame Towers look to the future. One of the nicest spots for a ramble is Baku Boulevard, which runs along the Caspian Sea. This park-lined promenade dates back 100 years to when oil barons started building their mansions along the shore.

As you stroll down leafy boulevards past palaces, mosques and museums, stop at the city’s many restaurants for a taste of Azeri cuisine. Some of the best dishes are batiq, fish kebab served with sour plum sauce, and dushbara, doughy dumplings stuffed with lamb and mint. For dessert, try some hazelnut-filled shekerbura pastry washed down with strong black tea.

When to go?

Baku is named the ‘City of Winds’ because it’s windy nearly year-round, with warm summers and cool, wet winters. For the nicest walking weather, try April, May or October – temperatures aren’t too hot and the sun should be out.

This modern hotel is just a few steps from Winter Park, a public space with benches and fountains that opened in 2013. The rooms are big and brightly coloured, and guests love the breakfast buffet. You can reach all of Baku’s best sights within a pleasant 10 to 20 minute walk.

Rooms here are rich brown and gold, with minibars and bathtubs. You’re a bit outside the city centre, but it’s only a few metro stops to the Old Town. Extra touches like a pianist playing during breakfast and a glittery sauna make this a relaxing spot to stay.

Fairmount Baku, Flame Towers – Baku, Azerbaijan

This 5-star hotel is actually inside of one of the Flame Towers. You get panoramic views over all of Baku, with some rooms offering views of the Caspian Sea. Guests loved the sauna and gym area, and the cocktail bar is great for unwinding after a day of sightseeing.

On Aga Neimatulla Street Apartment – Baku, Azerbaijan

This apartment’s size and setting more than than make up for its slightly out-of-the-way location. It’s enormous, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and the neighbourhood has great restaurants and shops. You’ll feel really at home here, with everything you need to cook a meal, wash your clothes and unwind.
