Step aboard these stationary sleeper trains for a stay to remember.
The Old Railway Station – Petworth
At The Old Railway Station, every detail recalls the golden age of rail. A set of Edwardian Pullman lounge cars has been meticulously converted – clad inside with rich wood panelling and furnished with comfortable, period-style beds. Each spacious compartment also has its own ensuite bathroom.
The building itself dates back to 1892 and served as Petworth Railway Station for decades until it was closed to passengers in the 1950s. You can still spot the original ticket windows and the Station Master’s office.
In summer, breakfast is served out on the old platform, while in winter it moves to the booking hall, warmed by a crackling log fire. The waiting room – once a hive of comings-and-goings – is now a laid-back lounge.
Train Lodge – Amsterdam
Train Lodge is made from a set of sleeper carriages that once shuttled passengers between Zürich and Rome. Now, they’re permanently installed by Amsterdam Sloterdijk station, providing affordable accommodation for visitors to the Dutch capital.
The locomotive-turned-hostel has a range of sleeping options. These include private and shared compartments for up to six people, to an entire 33-berth carriage for large groups. You’ll sleep in the original bunk beds and have your own washbasin and overhead luggage rack.
Amsterdam Sloterdijk station offers convenient train, bus and metro links, but for a truly Dutch experience, guests can hire one of the hostel’s bikes and take to the cycle paths instead.
Train Hostel – Brussels
Brussels’ Train Hostel was designed in collaboration with artist François Schuiten and the Belgian National Railway Company. Sections of retired trains were cut up and incorporated into the building itself, while the interior was decorated with memorabilia sourced from donors and local vintage markets.
At the hostel, guests can choose from authentic sleeper cabins or spacious railway-themed rooms. Couples can also snuggle up in the top-floor Train Suite – a completely renovated carriage with its own terrace, looking out over the city.
To continue the theme, the Train World museum is home to Europe’s oldest steam engine, and is located just 100 metres from the hostel.
