Currently, satellite digital television is a popular form of digital broadcasting in the world, with wide coverage and broadcast of many program channels thanks to its wide frequency range. DVB-S2 is the 2nd generation of satellite digital television, born to expand and enhance the standard DVB-S and DVB-DSNG being used on broadcasting equipment worldwide.
What is DVB-S2?
DVB-S2 (Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite – Second Generation) is a television standard for sharp images that can be up to Full HD along with vivid, realistic sound, providing an impressive, high-quality audiovisual experience. This is the second generation satellite digital television standard of digital television broadcast via satellite.
The feature of satellite digital television is that it always uses a parabolic pan to receive signals directly from the satellite directly into the digital decoder.
Currently, in Vietnam, there are 4 units that are exploiting and using satellite digital television technology: An Vien Television, VTC TV, K + TV and HTV television. All are using the band of Vietnam’s Vinasat satellite.
Advantages and disadvantages of the DVB-S2 . standard
+ Advantages: Satellite digital television has advantages that terrestrial and cable TV cannot have such as: wide coverage area, independent of terrain, field strength at the receiving point is stable and uniform throughout the country, so the image and sound are always of good quality. This television service is suitable for all terrain conditions in Vietnam.
+ Disadvantages: Installation is more difficult, it is necessary to install a parabolic pan that rotates in a certain direction. At the same time, the DVB-S2 Receiver is affected by the weather. The standard installation pan is light, shady, you can see it. Heavy heavy rain is jerky, can’t watch (obscured by dark clouds and lost signal). In addition, the price is more expensive than terrestrial TV DVB-T2 (What is DVB – T2?)
Why use DVB-S2?
DVB-S2 is expected to gradually replace its predecessor DVB-S thanks to its superiority in performance and flexibility:
Faster data transfer.
Compared with the DVB–S standard with the same transmission conditions, DVB–S2 is capable of transmitting data up to more than 30% in the same bandwidth. In other words, a signal transmitted according to the DVB–S2 standard requires 30% less bandwidth than when using DVB–S. DVB-S2 with bandwidth efficiency increased from 30% to 131% compared to DVB-S is expected to bring great efficiency when applied, with the ability to simultaneously transmit many high-speed services. such as high-definition television, HDTV, high-speed Internet, data transmission and professional applications… on the same satellite transponder that the previous DVB-S system could hardly perform. .
Increase the efficiency of the transmission capacity.
In the coverage area, the reception requirement of a DVB-S2 signal is about 2.5 dB lower than that of a DVB-S signal with the same fault protection conditions. In addition, DVB–S2 is compatible with many satellite transponders that vary in spectrum efficiency (from 0.5 to 4.5 bit/sHz) and require C/N ratio combination (from -2 dB to +16 dB).
The variable coding and modulation (VCM) function allows different levels of error protection and modulation to be performed to use or vary on a frame-by-frame basis. This function can also be combined with the use of a return channel to form a closed loop. Therefore, the transmission parameters are optimized for each communication channel separately depending on the transmission line conditions.
DVB-S2 is designed with the ultimate in features
DVB-S2 has been optimized for broadband satellite applications such as:
- Broadcasting services: Transmission of SDTV or HDTV programs.
- Interactive services including internet access.
- Professional applications: distribution of digital TV signals to terrestrial digital television stations, data transmission and other professional applications (DSNG, Internet Truncking, Cable Feeds…).
DVB-S2 is not restricted to MPEG-2 video and audio encoding but can be compatible with MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and HDTV encodings. The standard is also more flexible when it comes to accepting any type of input, including continuous bitstream, single or multiprogram MPEG transport, IP or ATM. This feature allows other data streams and future data configurations to be used with DVB-S2 without the need for a new standard.
Which TV has DVB-S2?
Currently, the fact that DVB-S2 is built-in on TVs is quite new and only Skyworth is the pioneer and only brand in the market today, launching TV models with integrated DVB-S2, Typically, such as 32 inch Skyworth 32E310 Led TV, 32 inch Skyworth 40E310 Led TV…. Hopefully in the near future, there will be more TV models with integrated DVB-S2 for users to have more choices. Choose unique entertainment, while still saving costs.
