Hanging Gardens Ubud, Bali

If you haven’t already heard of the Hanging Gardens of Bali, then it’s about time to familiarise yourself with this sublime rainforest retreat. Its split-level, infinity swimming pool is built on one side of a wild-looking valley, appearing suspended within the coffee trees, orchids and bamboo. Resting on the edge of the pool, you can see nothing but twisting jungle creepers, waterfalls and mist floating through the greenery. And – as if the main pool wasn’t bewildering enough – each villa suite features its own infinity plunge pool for tropical skinny dipping or private, pensive moments.

Loi Suites Iguazu Hotel, Argentina

The swimming pool complex at this remote hotel seems totally in harmony with nature; the colour of the teak decking complements the teal water, while jungle vines dangle above you as you swim. The hotel is located just inland from the Iguazu River, and guests are invited to canoe or hike through the rainforest – if you can tear yourself away from the pool, that is. For the full effect, take a dip at night when the water is illuminated, in turn lighting up the ancient, indigenous trees that surround the pool.

Boucan by Hotel Chocolat, Saint Lucia

While the focus of this historic cocoa plantation-cum-luxury hotel is on its chocolate-inspired, on-site restaurant, the infinity swimming pool cannot be downplayed. It looks out onto the volcanic spire of Saint Lucia landmark, Petit Piton, and is a vantage point for some stupendous Caribbean sunsets. To feel even more immersed in nature, follow the nearby Gros Piton Trail Hike along the island’s western coast, heading back to your suite at the end of the day to spruce up underneath the enormous rainforest shower.

Phum Baitang, Cambodia

Though this resort is technically not surrounded by rainforest, its resplendent swimming pool deserves to be on this list (and in Cambodia you’re never far from the jungle). Just outside of Siem Reap, close to the mystical ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat, the property’s garden is bordered by glowing-green rice paddies. But its the banana palms, ferns and flowering, fragrant frangipani growing between the thatched private huts that lend it its rainforest feel.

This luxury resort can be found in Queensland in the depths of the Daintree, the world’s oldest rainforest, on a private peninsula where no other human development can be seen.
