6 Steps Tutorial: How to draw Winnie the Pooh and color him
Today you will learn how to draw the favorite bear of children all over the world. We’re talking about Winnie the Pooh, of course. These instructions are divided into 6 easy to follow steps that children can follow as well. Learn how to draw Winnie the Pooh with this guide.
Materials needed for this tutorial
- HB Pencil
- Fineliner pen
- Drawing paper
- Eraser
- Paint (in our case watercolor)
Learn How To Draw Winnie The Pooh
Step 1
Draw the shape of Winnie the Pooh. In our instructions, we limit ourselves to a portrait of the dreamy bear, which we finish with his shirt. However, a full-body drawing would only be a little more complicated, as most of the details are hidden in his face and his top.
First, start drawing a circle for the head, two lines sloping down from it, and the ears.
Use a HB pencil so that you don’t leave dark marks. Get used to applying minimal pressure on the pencil to be able to erase the redundant lines later on quickly.
Step 2
Next, you can work out the exact shape of the head. Winnie the Pooh’s big smile when he sees the honeypot is evident in the form of his cheeks. His cheeks are protruding to the outside. Draw his cheeks by protruding the lines a little from the original round shape.
The ears should correspond with the plane of the face. In our illustration, Pooh tilts his head a little to the side. Thus the ears are not at the same horizontal height. It is helpful to visualize the alignment of the head with a small line.
Step 3 in how to draw Winnie the Pooh
Now start to replace the original strokes of his body with his top. The shirt fits tight around his neck, so we can suggest a small collar by folding the fabric. At the sides, you draw two lines down to indicate his arms.
Step 4
Now we will look at the facial features of the bear. A second guideline, which illustrates the inclination of the head, can help you to draw the face.
Start with the snout of Winnie the Pooh. The upper end of the nose begins approximately at the center of the face. Above it, draw one fold that makes the snout look a little more real.
When Winnie the Pooh is busy with his honey, he likes to close his eyes and express his joy and satisfaction. But you can also draw the eyes open with two circular dots.
His eyebrows stay quite high on the forehead. Only when he is sad, he pulls them down a little. But in our motif, that is not the case.
Between the lower edge of his snout and his T-shirt, his mouth is about halfway down. A broad grin with dimples on the sides makes up his smile.
How to draw Winnie the Pooh is easy if you know what you are doing. Add a little line underneath the smile to hint at the chin of the bear.
Step 5
And that already completes his face. Now you can erase the redundant lines and intensify the important ones with a pencil.
We decided to draw the outlines again with a felt tip pen so that we can erase all the pencil lines afterward.
Step 6 (optional)
Now we add color to the drawing. You can paint Winnie the Pooh with crayons just as well as with a wet paint medium. In our case, we went with watercolor, as its playful look and a certain randomness factor suit the sometimes clumsy bear best.
With three colors, you are already perfectly equipped to paint him. Crimson red and a yellow tone, each mixed with lots of water, as well as a dark shade for the snout, are enough to color the bear.
The first layer acts as an underpainting. Here we use very little pigment in a large amount of water. This would traditionally be called a “wash” with watercolors.
The following layers become more and more intense by increasing the ratio of pigment to water. Areas that need to be emphasized are painted several times with the same color mixtures with less water.
