Ever tried to get tie-dye off your skin or hands without success? Here are 5 simple methods which might come in handy! But first…
Now and then, it’s impossible not getting your hands dirty while crafting on a DIY project at home. Maybe you have a couple of some favorite old clothes you’d like to wear still, but you know they have seen better days and would really need some revamping to be in some sort of OK shape to wear out again.
Now, you’re torn between throwing them away and handing them out or rejigging them for some stay-at-home dress out.
So, after careful considerations, you opted to try out the new tie-dye technique you learned from a friend on these clothes.
Perhaps, you or your little ones have got a project that involves some tie-dying, and well, while at it has made some pretty nice mess of colors.
Maybe, you were just trying to apply some on your hair – and you probably did a fine job, however, when you look at the mirror, you see some pesky dyes clinging around your hairline, scalp, and ears.
Then, you get a bit panicky and Googled ways to remove the dye.
The bottom line of what I’m saying is; you or someone close to you got themselves all messed up with dye, and you’re in search of effective methods to get rid of the colors-on-skin quick.
If that’s the case, here are some of the tested remedies to removing tie-dye or any color for that matter.
Note; however, you aren’t restricted to just one method – there are several ways you can get dye off the skin.
For this article, I’d be grouping them into using home remedies and off the shelf professional products, so you can use the method that’s best suited to your lifestyle.
So, here we go.
Using Home Remedies to Getting Tie Dye off Skin
1. Wash off fast
Ok, that’s like the handiest, first-to-mind method. It’s really not complicated – you’ve dyed your cloth or hair and have some of those colors on your hands and face – simply reach for your general use soap, rub on the stained spots and rinse.
Most times, if done quickly when the dye hasn’t soaked into it, you’re likely going to wash it off.
If however, after washing you notice that it’s still on, then, you may want to consider using a bit harsher soap – a lava soap will do just fine too.
Now, as you may well know, some stains (dyes, colors) are really stubborn – so stubborn that even super-scouring soaps wouldn’t even get them to bulge.
Ever been stuck with such stubborn dyes?
Your next best option is to wash your hands with baking soda. You see, I didn’t recommend this earlier because, as it turns out, washing soda is quite abrasive.
Don’t have baking soda?
Use a toothpaste containing baking soda – you know, those gritty, traditional tubes of toothpaste. And yes, it is safe to use around the face and hands.
Just as when you brush your teeth, all you need is a dot of paste. Then, rub it in around the area with it. Use a washcloth, as it is easier to wipe off and clean your hands when done.
The thing is, baking soda is sure to break down the clinging active ingredients, and then rinse it to wash off the color.
If you want, you can add lemon juice to the baking soda to form an all-encompassing natural stain remover.
Word of caution though, be sure to mix water to the baking soda to dilute it as it can irritate or makes it turn red – that is for sensitive skin.
Consider using another method altogether instead of baking soda for highly sensitive skin.

2. Use baby lotion or any oil-based moisturizer
Baby oil, olive oil, and any other oil-based moisturizer can effectively lift the stain off the skin or hands.
Just like the baking soda – though, a lot milder – the oil-based product breaks the active ingredients in the dye down, thereby making it easy to wash off. It’s the perfect remedy if you have sensitive skin.
To use this method:
- Wet a cotton ball or a washcloth with the oil and apply on the stained area. Rub it in for several minutes.
- Wash off and check if the dye has gone. If you find some still, reapply the lotion again and rub in again. However, you may want to allow to sit a bit longer before washing off the oil.
- For a more stubborn stain, apply the oil and leave overnight. Cover your pillow with a towel to avoid getting dye on it. Rinse off with warm water in the morning.

3. Use Vinegar
So, the third method on our list is the use of vinegar. It works by removing dead cells from the epidermis like exfoliating.
- Dip a cotton ball in the vinegar and apply on the dyed area. Gently rub in circles to remove the stain.
- Rinse off and check if it’s gone. Repeat as many times as needed to get the stain completely off the hands.
Finally, if you, however, notice when using vinegar soreness or the skin feels irritated, discontinue using it and try a milder product.
