How to Stop Kids From Licking Their Fingers [1]
When kids have a habit of licking their fingers, it is not only unsanitary but also gross! If you find your little one is obsessed with putting tongue to digits, start by asking that the behavior stop. It may also be helpful to explain why licking one’s hands is a bad idea
Some children have no idea how much they are licking their fingers. As noted in the KidsHealth.org article “Your Child’s Habits,” often a child is unaware of a bad habit
Please stop.” It may be frustrating to repeat this phrase over and over again, but remind yourself that helping your child end a worrisome behavior is worth the effort.. You may also notice that kiddos tend to lick their fingers in certain situations
Licking and Vitamin Deficiencies in Children [2]
Children enjoy new sensory experiences, so it’s not too unusual to find your toddler licking her hands, the furniture or other random objects. This behavior might be because she’s mimicking the family pet or trying to taste something novel, but if it’s occurring repeatedly, it may be caused by a nutrient deficiency.

So if your child is repeatedly licking his lips, he may have a vitamin B1 (thiamin) deficiency. A deficiency in this nutrient causes cracked lips or even cracks in the corners of the mouth, which is called cheilitis or cheilosis.
Finger and Thumb Sucking in Children – Why Break the Habit? And How? [3]
Many babies and toddlers suck their thumbs or fingers. In fact, it’s a completely normal, healthy way for small children to self-soothe and comfort themselves
The majority of young children who suck their thumbs or fingers stop by themselves before preschool age. But it’s important for children to stop before their permanent teeth come in, because over time it can cause permanent damage.
Prolonged sucking can push the upper front teeth outward. Vigorous sucking is more damaging than if the thumb simply “rests” in the mouth, although it’s still important to break the habit
Why babies put everything in their mouths [4]
When parents bring their children in to see speech and language therapist Lindsay Hockey, she asks: “Did your child mouth as an infant?”. Child development professionals want babies to mouth different textures in infancy to prevent speech delays and picky eating.
Mouthing is how they learn about sensory qualities like shape, density, texture, and taste. By 6 months, babies take in more information through their mouth than any other sense.
Grasping and bringing an object to their mouth requires your baby to coordinate their vision and motor skills.. Their own hands are the first things your baby will put into their mouth
How to Stop Kids From Licking Their Fingers [5]
Licking fingers can be unsanitary and unpleasant to watch, especially if your child has a habit of placing her fingers in her mouth. Like other oral habits, finger licking may become a learned behavior that a child does without thought
Talk with your child about the benefits of not licking fingers so your youngster understands the reasons to stop, advises Pam Marshalla, author of “Practical Solutions for Home and Therapy — How to Stop Thumbsucking and Other Oral Habits.” You might list benefits such as avoiding germs in his mouth, avoiding messy and sticky fingers by washing them instead of licking and appearing more mature because he doesn’t lick his fingers.. Encourage your child to remember not to lick her fingers
Explain that finger-licking can be a habit, meaning that it takes time to remember and learn not to do it anymore. Assure her that you will help her work on this goal.
How to Stop Kids From Licking Their Fingers [6]
Constant licking or sucking of the fingers can cause permanent damage to the teeth as well as skin issues, according to the University of Chicago 1. And while occasional licking might be expected in very young children, you really don’t want your kids to become used to doing it
Look for situations when your child would normally suck his fingers — such as moments of stress or when getting sleepy — and praise him for not doing it. You might need to remind him gently to stop sucking and then say “thank you” or other words of encouragement when he stops
Ask your child to wash his hands after handling food. Children might lick their fingers because they smell or taste like something they enjoy eating

My Toddler Licks Literally Everything, So I Asked 3 Doctors If I Should Be Freaking Out. I have never paid so much attention to a tongue until I became a mom
Toddlers are very curious, which is great most of the time. But for some reason, one way my son likes to explore the world around him is by licking things

I am working with a child who has just started licking things: people, walls, toys, etc. The first step would be to assess the possible function of the licking behavior
In this case, we will assume the function is “sensory seeking” and possibly the child not knowing what to do with “down-time.” A combination of replacement activities and increasing engagement will be discussed.. Use of replacement tools/activities for oral motor sensory seeking behavior and a well scheduled day that provides continual engagement serve as interventions to decrease licking behaviors.

7 year old licking hands/fingers [10]
Anxiety is a response to a perceived threat or danger – an abnormal state characterized by a feeling of being powerless and unable to cope with threatening events, (usually imaginary), and by a physical response, as sweating, trembling, etc. Many suffering from anxiety are not aware of their perceived threats and many are unable to control their urges without help
I might suggest you google this term and see if the description is similar to that of your son. Do you have a pediatrician who might be able to guide you? Anxiety disorders are highly treatable but, if this is the case with your son, he will not outgrow it nor will it go away
It’s becoming a problem because she doesn’t want to use chalk. Otherwise she is very social, smart and “normal” in every way

Hand licking (Aspergers) [12]
I am hoping that a few people may be able to give me their advice and experiences. My 5 year old son (nearly 6) has started licking his hands, fingers and wrists (I have caught him on occasion licking a trolley but put it down to absent mindedness) and I am not sure how to approach it
I did take to the internet and although there are suggestions about the behaviour there is not a lot on how to approach it.. About a year ago his reception teacher suggested taking him to the doctor for different observations and the doctor suggest aspergers but that it is a lenghty process and it needed to start back with the school and usually isn’t officially diagnosed until atleast 7
I think I will be taking him back to the doctor even to just have it recorded for any future outcome and his teacher suggested getting him a fiddle toy. Any help, advice or experience would be greatly received.
Dive into anything [13]
After his sister was born – May last year, she’s a little over one now -, he developed some babyish habits. Basic regression: using a baby voice/baby words, throwing tantrums, won’t potty train, aggressive with the baby, and just being difficult in general.
He’s constantly shoving his whole hand in his mouth when he’s talking or crying. Licking his fingers and then wiping his arms and face with them.
Uh, yeah, because you’re licking them every five seconds!!!!. This, added with the baby gibberish, hand flapping (to appear more babyish), vicious acting out, and the constant hand licking, he seems “special”
Sensory Processing In Children With Autism: Licking Behavior [14]
Just like sniffing, mouthing and licking might be another way for an ASD child to explore the world around them. We share three things you can do to keep this behaviour under control, as well as two play activities that can help your child with their behaviour.
Mouthing objects is a normal part of sensory exploration of taste, touch and smell. This behaviour also assists in the development of oral motor skills for eating and speech production.
Typically, children outgrow this behaviour as they mature. However, some children with ASD persist with this behaviour unless they are given alternative strategies to answer their oral sensory needs.
The habit of finger-licking: getting a solution out of the pandemic [15]
The habit of finger-licking: getting a solution out of the pandemic. The habit of finger-licking is an insanitary habit observed everywhere including hospital wards and other medical facilities, among providers and other staff members
Herein, we illustrate the risks imposed by this everyday habit on individuals practicing it and on surrounding people, we describe the challenges with prior attempts to defeat this habit, and we explain how the face mask can eliminate this ever-lasting habit.. Finger-licking is an insanitary habit that remains unnoticed
To name a few, these activities include opening grocery bags, separating prints or turning pages, counting money, and playing cards.. Studies have shown that the pertinacious habit of finger-licking is far more common than thought, even among celebrities and health professionals
How to help your kids break their bad habits [16]
Your kid has a booger in their nose, they stick their finger up there to get it out and they feel better. Over the course of a cold or an allergy season, if that finger up the nose brings relief enough times, it could turn into a habitual thing they do anytime they need comfort
“They’ve learned that they make them feel good and provide comfort.”. That doesn’t mean you should let them go at it with abandon, because many habits aren’t exactly socially acceptable, while others can cause harm
Kids pick their noses to meet a need—there’s something in there that’s bothering them! Over time, they may start to pick out of habit whenever they need comfort or when they are bored, like during screen time.. First of all, don’t shame them—no matter how gross you think it is—because nose-picking is developmentally normal, says Michelle Ponti, a paediatrician in London, Ont.
Hand licking for long periods of time? [17]
What is this? Has anyone had a child do this? She’s not eating anything. Just bringing her hand up to her mouth every 2-3 seconds and licking each finger, then her palm then other side of hand….? Positive side….she’s super smart with her preschool work, loves to give hugs, not a picky eater, ….
I finally redirected her, but she wasn’t a happy camper.. A habit that she’s developed to deal with her anxieties and now can’t stop
These were my first thoughts, too, particularly either OCD or self-stimming.. A habit that she’s developed to deal with her anxieties and now can’t stop

Is Hand Licking A Sign Of Autism [20]
But what causes normal brain development to go awry? Some NIMH researchers are investigating genetic causes-the role that heredity and genes play in passing the disorder from one generation to the next. Others are looking at medical problems related to pregnancy and other factors.
For example, identical twins are far more likely than fraternal twins to both have autism. Unlike fraternal twins, which develop from two separate eggs, identical twins develop from a single egg and have the same genetic makeup.
However, autism does not appear to be due to one particular gene. If autism, like eye color, were passed along by a single gene, more family members would inherit the disorder
The Hand Licking Incident [21]
We assume as adults that children who do things that are not what we want or against our instructions need “discipline” in order to learn they should have made a better choice.. Young children are, in most cases, not making a conscious choice at all in these cases
They are not deciding to be bad because it is easier/more fun/worth it at that age.. Positive discipline is not actually discipline at all
The essence of positive discipline is the search for the underlying reason a child is not capable of following your direction at that point in time / for the task at hand.. Barring an exceptional case, (younger in particular) children are straight up desperate for attention and affection of their parents.

Constant hand licking – nervous habit or OCD ??? [24]
My 7 yr old son constantly licks his fingers and hands and wipes saliva all over them. Its very upsetting and I do not know what to do about it
He started doing it last spring, I think when he had a wobbley tooth and he got used to putting his fingers in his mouth. Within a couple of weeks this progressed to him licking his fingers, hands and he had started to lick his forearms
Then it just stopped when he went into school after the holidays and I thought it may have been an anxiety thing. Has anyone else experienced this ? I’m worried that it might be the start of OCD or something similar ?
Sensory Processing Explained | Oral Sensory System [25]

Licking the thumb-sucking habit: New research urges kids to stop earlier [26]
Thumb sucking is a normal calming behavior during infancy; at one year of age, nearly 1 in 3 children suck their thumbs. Although many quit spontaneously before they turn 3, an estimated 20% of children continue well beyond this age.
“The assumption has been that quitting by age 5 or 6 is acceptable,” says Mary Hayes, a pediatric dentist and spokeswoman for the American Dental Assn., “but we now know that we have to worry about it earlier.”. Los Angeles resident Myl-7/8ne Moreno was surprised when her children’s dentist told her that her youngest son, Pablo, then 4, had to kick the habit
In a study published in Pediatric Dentistry in 2005, John Warren, an associate professor in the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa, and his colleagues followed several hundred children from infancy into early childhood and evaluated the effects of nonnutritive sucking behaviors, like thumb sucking, on the teeth and jaws.. They found that thumb sucking can push the front teeth forward, causing them to stick out too much in relation to the teeth in the lower jaw
Rett syndrome – Symptoms and causes [27]
Rett syndrome is a rare genetic neurological and developmental disorder that affects the way the brain develops. This disorder causes a progressive loss of motor skills and language
These babies then lose skills they previously had — such as the ability to crawl, walk, communicate or use their hands.. Over time, children with Rett syndrome have increasing problems with the use of muscles that control movement, coordination and communication
Unusual hand movements, such as repetitive rubbing or clapping, replace purposeful hand use.. Although there’s no cure for Rett syndrome, potential treatments are being studied
